# Dog 2027: A Break of Three Positions, Not a Clash

未 and 戌 are three apart, not six — 破, not 冲. Both are storehouse branches, one holding fire and one holding wood. Nine Dog years, ages, and the punishment that needs the Ox.

## The short answer

2027 is 丁未, the Fire Goat. The pillar year opens at 09:46 on 4 February Beijing time, two days before the festival on 6 February.

The Dog is 戌, and 戌 is in 破 with 未 — a break, not a clash. The two are three positions apart, not six. That distinction is the whole reason this page exists: 破 and 冲 get conflated constantly, and the tables treat them as different relations.

There is a second relation, and a third structural fact. 戌 and 未 are both storehouse branches: 戌 holds fire, 未 holds wood. And 戌 is one third of the 丑戌未 punishment, whose missing member in 2027 is the Ox.

Nine Dog years still have living people: 1922, 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006 and 2018.

## 破 measures three positions, and that is not the same as a clash

冲 and 破 are both relations of opposition, and English translations of both land on words like conflict. In the branch tables they are different numbers.

冲 is six positions: two branches on the same axis, directly facing. There are six such pairs and they are easy to see on a compass.

破 is three positions. The six pairs are 子酉, 卯午, 辰丑, 未戌, 寅亥 and 巳申. 未 is the eighth branch; three places on is 申, 酉, 戌. So 未戌 is a break, and it is a right angle on the compass rather than a straight line.

That geometry is why the tradition handles the two differently. A clash sets two branches face to face; a break strikes at an angle, and the classical image is a fracture rather than a collision. It also explains why the standard 犯太岁 recitation tends to list 破 after 冲 — not because a measurement said so, but because a right angle is not a head-on impact.

Two cautions about that convention. It is an ordering in a recitation, not a computed severity, because the branch tables carry no severity field. And several popular sources reverse the two. What nobody disputes is the arithmetic: 未 to 戌 is three, and 未 to 丑 is six.

## Two storehouses meeting, and the earth inside each one

Both branches in this pairing are storehouses, which is rarer than it sounds and gives the relation its character.

There are four storehouse branches — 辰, 戌, 丑, 未 — and each holds one of the four elements. 辰 holds water, 戌 holds fire, 丑 holds metal, 未 holds wood. They appear as the third member of the four 三合 frames, and every one of them is an earth branch.

So in 2027 a Dog and the year are two containers meeting. One holds fire, the other holds wood. Neither is the element it contains; both are earth on the outside.

Inside, they differ in a way that separates this page from the Ox page, where the two branches share an identical principal stem:

| Branch | Principal | Secondary |
|---|---|---|
| 戌 | 戊土 | 辛金, 丁火 |
| 未 | 己土 | 丁火, 乙木 |

The principal stems are both earth but not the same earth: 戊 is yang, 己 is yin. The secondary stems differ except for one — 丁火 appears in both. So the break runs between two earth branches of opposite polarity, and the only element they genuinely share is the fire that 戌 stores and 未 merely carries.

That is a structural description, not an evaluation. What it means for a given chart depends on the rest of the chart, which is the subject of the next sections rather than this one.

## The punishment needs the Ox, and 破 is not 刑

犯太岁 in 2027 lists the Dog under two labels at once, 破 and 刑, and they are not the same relation.

破 is intrinsic to the pair: 戌 and 未 are three apart, and that is the end of it. 刑 is a set of three. 丑, 戌 and 未 form the punishment the texts call 恃勢之刑, and its members act in sequence: 丑 punishes 戌, 戌 punishes 未, 未 punishes 丑.

In 2027 the year brings 未. A Dog brings 戌. The third member, 丑, is not in the year. So the punishment is conditional on something outside the year — whether 丑 appears elsewhere in the chart — while the break is unconditional.

This is the mirror image of the Ox page. For the Ox, the clash with the year is unconditional and the punishment needs 戌. For the Dog, the break with the year is unconditional and the punishment needs 丑. Each animal holds the branch the other is missing, which is why these two pages cross-reference rather than repeat each other.

It is also why "the Dog is in a punishment year in 2027" is imprecise as stated. The Dog is in a break year in 2027. Whether the punishment completes is a question about a chart, and the year alone cannot answer it.

## Your harmony partner is in harmony with the year; you are not

The Dog's 六合 partner is 卯, the Rabbit. That pairing is fixed: 卯戌 is one of the six, and it does not change with the cycle.

In 2027 the Rabbit is in 三合 with the year. So the structure is this: the animal the Dog pairs with is in one of the two harmony relations with 未, while the Dog itself is in 破 with 未, and 卯未 和 戌未 sit three positions apart from each other in the same frame.

There is a further overlap worth naming, because it is the kind of thing a chart-level reading notices and a year-label reading cannot. 卯, 戌 and 未 are three of the four storehouse branches. In 2027 all three are in play — 未 in the year, 戌 in the Dog, 卯 in the Dog's harmony partner — and two of the three relations between them are running at once: 卯戌 合 and 未戌 破.

None of that says anything happens. It says the 2027 configuration around the Dog is denser than a single label suggests, and that a page describing the Dog as "in a break year" has described one edge of a triangle.

## Nine Dog years, and the age each one turns in 2027

The ages below are the age a person turns during 2027, counted from the birthday. 虚岁 is the nominal count that starts at one at birth and adds a year at each new year rather than at each birthday.

| Born | Pillar | Turns in 2027 | 虚岁 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1922 | 壬戌 | 105 | 106 |
| 1934 | 甲戌 | 93 | 94 |
| 1946 | 丙戌 | 81 | 82 |
| 1958 | 戊戌 | 69 | 70 |
| 1970 | 庚戌 | 57 | 58 |
| 1982 | 壬戌 | 45 | 46 |
| 1994 | 甲戌 | 33 | 34 |
| 2006 | 丙戌 | 21 | 22 |
| 2018 | 戊戌 | 9 | 10 |

Five Dog pillars exist — 壬戌, 甲戌, 丙戌, 戊戌, 庚戌 — because the stem advances two places for every four the branch advances. Three pairs on this list are sixty years apart and share a pillar: 1922 and 1982 are 壬戌, 1934 and 1994 are 甲戌, 1946 and 2006 are 丙戌.

Two entries deserve a note. 1958 is 戊戌 — earth over earth, the only one of the five where stem and branch share an element, and the same pillar as 2018, so the nine-year-old and the sixty-nine-year-old in this table are the same chart structure sixty years apart. And the nine-year-old is on this list at all only because the relation does not care about age: 戌 and 未 are three apart whether the person carrying 戌 is nine or ninety.

If you were born in 1970 you turn 57 in 2027, and you have lived through five 未 years — 1979, 1991, 2003, 2015, 2027. Whatever a break year does, you have four completed samples of it.

## What the break does not say

破 is a relation between two branches. It is not a prediction, and the label 破太岁 is a category, not a verdict.

Three things it does not do:

It does not say the year is worse or better than a clash year. The ordering 值, 冲, 刑, 破, 害 is a recitation convention. No table in the system carries a severity column, so any page that ranks 破 below 冲 or above 害 is reporting a custom, not a computation.

It does not apply to all nine birth years equally, or in the same way. 1946 is 丙戌 — fire over earth, the stem feeding the branch. 1970 is 庚戌 — metal over earth, earth producing metal. 1994 is 甲戌 — wood over earth, wood controlling earth. Three different charts with one branch.

It does not begin on 1 January. The pillar year opens at 立春, 4 February 2027 at 09:46. Anything dated from the calendar year's start is describing a different window from the one the chart uses.

On practice, briefly, since the Dog is on the 2027 安太岁 list: temples that publish one do it for the four 犯太岁 animals, and the practices around it — a lamp, a tablet, a red cord — vary enough by region that describing one version as the ritual would be describing a local custom. This site does not treat the practice as a mechanism, and neither, in general, do the temples that perform it.

## The 2018 seam: twelve days that are Dog by the pillar and Rooster by the count

The Dog's most recent year was 2018, and its two boundaries left a gap of twelve days.

In 2018, 立春 fell on 4 February and Chinese New Year on 16 February. The term came first. Anyone born between those dates is 戊戌 — Dog — by the pillar count, because the pillar changed at 立春. By the popular count, which changes at the festival, they are still 丁酉, Rooster, for another twelve days.

So a child born on 10 February 2018 is a Dog on a chart and a Rooster on a birthday card. Both answers come from rules. The rules are answering different questions, and neither is an error.

The gap's direction is not derivable from the animal. In 2023 the festival came first; in 2018, 2021, 2026 and 2027 the term comes first. Every year has its own two dates, and the only reliable route is to check the year's boundary against the hour of birth.

For 2027 itself: 立春 on 4 February, the festival on 6 February. A birth in those two days is Goat by the pillar and, by the popular count, still Horse.

## Check which side of the line you fall on

One page answers it if you know your birth date and time: [a chart that applies the pillar boundary to the minute](/chart). The year pillar decides whether you are a Dog, and the hour is what the boundary is measured against.

The check matters most for births in early February of a Dog year — 1922, 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006, 2018 — and for 2018 specifically the window is 4 to 15 February, twelve days when the popular count says Rooster and the pillar says Dog.

What this page has done is describe three relations and their arithmetic. What it has not done is tell you what 2027 will bring, because the arithmetic does not contain that, and the moment a page starts supplying it, the page has stopped describing the system and started inventing a second one on top of it.

## Key points

- 未 and 戌 are three positions apart: 破, not 冲, which is six.
- Both are storehouse branches — 戌 holds fire, 未 holds wood — and their principal stems differ, 戊 against 己.
- The 丑戌未 punishment needs the Ox, which is not in 2027; the break does not need anything.
- The Dog's 六合 partner is the Rabbit, and the Rabbit is in 三合 with 2027 while the Dog is in 破.
- Born 4 to 15 February 2018? Dog by the pillar, Rooster by the popular count.
