# Horse Chinese Zodiac: Years, Elements and Compatibility

The Horse holds the Chinese zodiac branch for noon — 午, 11:00 to 13:00. Ten Horse years run 1930–2042 in five element forms, and 2026 is a Fire Horse.

## The short answer

The Horse is the seventh of the twelve Chinese zodiac animals — 午, the branch whose character is also the word for noon, 11:00 to 13:00. Its years are 1930, 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002, 2014, 2026 and 2038. The current year, 2026, is a Fire Horse. It combines with the Goat, forms a three-harmony with the Tiger and the Dog, clashes with the Rat, and is harmed by the Ox.

[If you were born in late January or early February, the two new-year lines disagree about your animal](/chinese-zodiac-calculator) — a chart settles it by your birth date and hour rather than by the calendar.

The rest of this page stays with the branch: the noon character, the self-punishment it carries, and where its ten years fall.

## The branch that is also noon

Among the twelve earthly branches, one shares its character with a time of day. The Horse is the seventh branch — 午 (wu) — and 午 is also the word the language uses for noon. The double-hour that carries it runs from 11:00 to 13:00, the middle of the day.

Its opposite is just as literal. The Rat's branch is 子 (zi), the same character as midnight, and the two sit directly across the twelve-branch ring from each other. When the relationship table says Horse and Rat clash, it is not assigning a mood; it is naming the day's two midpoints and marking them opposed.

This page covers three things about that position: the years that carry Horse, the element form each of those years holds, and where the branch sits in the relationship table behind [the 144-pair chart](/blog/chinese-zodiac-compatibility-chart). What it does not cover is what a Horse year does to a person — a year branch is one of eight positions in a chart, and this page will not inflate one of eight into a personality.

## Ten Horse years, and where the Fire Horse falls

Horse years arrive every twelve years. Between 1930 and 2042 there are ten of them, and they do not all carry the same element: the element comes from the year's heavenly stem, the stem advances by ten while the branch advances by twelve, so each animal meets five stems before the pairing repeats.

| Year | Branch | Form | Element |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 1930 | 庚午 (geng-wu) | Metal Horse | Metal |
| 1942 | 壬午 (ren-wu) | Water Horse | Water |
| 1954 | 甲午 (jia-wu) | Wood Horse | Wood |
| 1966 | 丙午 (bing-wu) | Fire Horse | Fire |
| 1978 | 戊午 (wu-wu) | Earth Horse | Earth |
| 1990 | 庚午 (geng-wu) | Metal Horse | Metal |
| 2002 | 壬午 (ren-wu) | Water Horse | Water |
| 2014 | 甲午 (jia-wu) | Wood Horse | Wood |
| 2026 | 丙午 (bing-wu) | Fire Horse | Fire |
| 2038 | 戊午 (wu-wu) | Earth Horse | Earth |

Two of those ten are Fire Horse years, sixty years apart: 1966 and 2026 — the year this page was written. They carry the same stem and the same branch, which is what makes them one form rather than two.

Read the table in two directions. Down the form column the order is fixed — Metal, Water, Wood, Fire, Earth, then back to Metal — so a Metal Horse year always sits twelve years after an Earth Horse year and never beside it. Across the animal name, five different years share one word: 1990 and 2002 are both Horses, twelve years apart, in different forms.

## One character, three middles

午 does not only name the middle of the day. The three summer months of the solar calendar are 巳, 午 and 未, and 午 is the middle one — the month whose midpoint is the summer solstice. So the same character marks noon on the clock, midsummer in the year, and due south on the compass, because south is where noon sits.

That triple is what makes Horse worth reading alongside Rat. 子 does the same work at the opposite end: the middle of the night, the middle of winter, due north. The two halves of the ring are mirrors, and their names say so before any table does.

None of this is a personality claim. It is the branch's position in three separate counting systems — hours, months, directions — all of which predate the animal labels and none of which depend on them. [How the five elements work](/blog/five-elements-overview) covers a fourth system the branch sits in.

## Horse Compatibility: Where Horse Sits in the Pairing Table

Every branch holds six positions in the classical relationship table — one for each rule that names it. Horse's are these:

- Six Harmony (六合): Goat
- Three Harmony (三合): Tiger, Dog
- Clash (六冲): Rat
- Harm (六害): Ox
- Self-punishment (自刑): Horse

Six Harmony is the pair the table treats as most binding, and Horse's partner there is the Goat — the eighth branch, directly next to it in the ring. Three Harmony is not a pair but a set: Horse's is Tiger, Horse, Dog, and what binds the three is arithmetic, since all three leave the same remainder when divided by four.

Self-punishment means the branch is listed against itself. Horse is one of only four branches that carry it — 辰 Dragon, 午 Horse, 酉 Rooster, 亥 Pig. Those four are worth a second note: they are exactly the four branches that no three-punishment set contains, so Horse takes a position against itself and appears in none of the punishment groups.

## The clash that is a clock

Clash is the branch six positions away, which on a twelve-branch ring is the one straight across. For Horse that is the Rat, and the reason is the opening of this page: noon against midnight. It is the only clash pair where both members are also the name of a time of day.

That coincidence is a useful check on any page that treats the clash as a statement about people. The rule that puts Horse and Rat opposite is positional — six steps around a ring of twelve — and it would put them opposite even if the branches carried no time meaning at all. The clock is a consequence of the geometry, not its cause.

## An element form is a label, not a temperament

The form in front of an animal name is not a subtype of the animal. It is the animal's branch paired with the year's stem, and it exists only because the two cycles have different lengths. Renaming the year changes nothing about anyone born in it: a Fire Horse and a Wood Horse are both Horses, and the distance between them is the distance between two years, not two characters.

This is worth stating because the naming invites a reading that is not there. Once a year carries a word like Fire in front of it, it is tempting to say Fire Horses are more restless and Wood Horses steadier. No page on this site does that, and this one will not start. The element's job in a chart is structural — which position it fills and what it does to the ones around it — not adjectival.

## Horse years begin in early February

A Horse year does not begin on 1 January, and it does not begin at Lunar New Year either. It begins at Li Chun (立春), the solar term that opens spring, which falls on 4 or 5 February.

In 2026 the two boundaries are far apart — Li Chun on 4 February, Lunar New Year in the second half of the month. Anyone born in between is a Horse under the reckoning used here and a Snake under the one most people carry in their heads. Two careful sources can label the same February birthday with different animals; neither is wrong, they are reading different boundaries.

The Hong Kong Observatory's conversion table for 2026 names the year Bing-wu, the Fire Horse, and marks Spring Commences in early February. This site's engine agrees with the observatory on the day. Where the two can differ is the minute the boundary falls, and that is covered below.

## Where this page can be wrong

Three places, stated plainly rather than buried.

The years and the element forms are arithmetic, and they are stable. The boundary dates are where the risk sits: this site computes Li Chun with a short astronomical series that is accurate to minutes rather than seconds, and in a boundary year that can move the answer for a birth at the wrong hour. In 2026 the engine's Li Chun runs about six minutes ahead of the observatory figure. For a birthday in mid-February that changes nothing; for a birth on 4 February just after 04:00 it can decide the animal.

The relationship table is the classical one, and classical sources do not agree on every cell. Where they conflict this page follows the algebra rather than a ranking of authorities: the rules are defined by position, so every cell can be recomputed and checked. If a Horse year is being sold to you as a verdict on your next twelve months, leave. [How this site handles sources](/editorial-policy) sets out the rest.

## Key points

- Horse is the seventh branch, and 午 is the same character the language uses for noon; its double-hour runs from 11:00 to 13:00.
- Horse forms Six Harmony with the Goat and Three Harmony with the Tiger and the Dog; it clashes with the Rat and is harmed by the Ox.
- Ten Horse years run from 1930 to 2042. Two of them are Fire Horse years, 1966 and 2026, and 2026 is the year this page was written.
- A Horse year starts at Li Chun in early February, not at Lunar New Year. In 2026 the two boundaries are well apart.
- Horse is one of four branches that carry self-punishment — and those four are exactly the branches that no three-punishment set contains.
