Elon Musk's BaZi Chart: Pillars, Cycles, and Turning Points

The Day Master is 甲, Yang Wood, and the month stem repeats the same character, so the same element stands at the top of the chart twice. The month branch 午 carries Fire, and Wood feeds Fire, which spends it. The year stem 辛 and the day branch 申 both carry Metal, and Metal controls Wood. The year branch 亥 carries Water, and Water feeds Wood. One drain, two pressures, one support.

The element tally for this date is easy to reproduce: Wood 2, Fire 1, Earth 2, Metal 2, Water 1. A reader who enters 28 June 1971 with 07:30 as the hour gets the same eight characters and the same count back.

That is the grid. It describes a set of relationships between eight characters, and it stops well short of describing a person.

The first three pillars are fixed by the birth date, 28 June 1971, and they hold regardless of what else is uncertain. The hour pillar is the one that depends on a clock.

Two times circulate for Musk. The more common one, 07:30, appears in a biography, and no published birth record stands behind it. A second version, 06:30, appears in reference databases and other chart sites with no stated source either.

The gap between them is small on paper and large in the chart. 07:00 is the boundary between 卯 and 辰, so 07:30 falls in 辰 and 06:30 falls in 卯. Different branch, and because the hour stem is derived from the day stem, a different stem as well.

True solar time does not rescue the first one either. Pretoria sits about 1.8 degrees west of the meridian its clocks run on, which pulls the local sun time back by about seven minutes, and the time of year costs a few more. The reading lands near 07:20, still inside 辰, but the margin is minutes rather than hours.

So this page uses the 07:30 chart throughout and marks the hour column as unconfirmed. Anyone reading a site that presents it as settled is reading a guess dressed as data.

辛亥 is the year pillar: Yin Metal above, the Pig branch below, and the branch carries Water.

The year pillar is the slowest of the four. It turns once every twelve years, so it covers a very large group of people at once, and in a traditional reading it carries the widest and earliest layer of a chart. The month pillar sets the climate, the day pillar carries the Day Master, and the hour pillar carries the later stretch of a life.

辛亥 is also the pillar that gives Musk his zodiac animal, and the date it turns on is not the date most zodiac tables use. The Four Pillars year turns at 立春, the first solar term of spring. The sequence runs forwards or backwards from the month pillar, and the direction comes from two inputs that have nothing to do with the hour: the polarity of the birth year's stem and the person's gender. 1971 carries 辛, a Yin stem, and the standard rule sends a male chart backwards.

The first cycle starts at about age seven. The standard reckoning counts three days from the preceding solar term to one year of life, and the preceding term here is 芒种, Grain in Ear, which fell on 6 June 1971. The birth date sits about twenty-two days past it.

That shape is set the moment the month pillar is set. It does not wait on a birth hour, because the Ten Gods are read against the day stem and the day pillar comes from the date.

The tradition reads partnership through Wealth, which is the element the Day Master controls. 甲 is Yang Wood and Wood controls Earth, so 戊 and 己 are his Wealth stars. 己 Yin Earth is 正财, Direct Wealth, the settled partner. 戊 Yang Earth is 偏财, Indirect Wealth, the partner who comes in from outside the expected line.

This chart holds both, and it holds them late.

戊 sits in the hour pillar. The hour covers the back half of a life, so the 偏财 resting there is a Wealth star with a long fuse on it. The last two cycles carry the rest. 己丑, running from 2018, arrives with 正财 as its stem. The 戊子 decade opening in 2028 arrives with 偏财. Two Wealth decades, one behind the other, closing the ladder.

The spouse palace is the day branch, and here it holds 申: Monkey, Metal. 申 carries three stems, 庚, 壬 and 戊, which read against a Yang Wood Day Master as 七杀, 偏印 and 偏财. The position the tradition assigns to the partner therefore holds a Wealth stem, a Resource stem and an Officer stem at once.

The tradition runs Wealth into Officer: Earth produces Metal, so a Wealth star feeds the Officer star. Two Wealth decades in the back half of the ladder read as feeding the standing they run beside.

The 庚寅 line is the strongest in the table. Those ten years read as pressure taken head on, and the record inside them is a run of near-failures that turned into firsts. Seven Killings arriving as the cycle stem is the classic shape of a decade that decides whether the thing survives.

Ages seven to seventeen carry no entries. Those years are not on the public record, so the reading of 癸巳 stands on the stem and branch alone: Direct Resource, the first feed, laid down before there was anything built to feed.

The same ladder runs on your own chart, and reading it does not need anyone's birth hour. The direction rule takes the year's polarity and your gender; the Ten Gods take the day stem. Those two inputs produce the six windows.

The 戊子 decade runs from 2028 to 2038, and it is the first cycle in the sequence whose branch stands opposite the month branch. 子 and 午 face each other across the compass, so this is a cycle that clashes a natal pillar.

The tradition reads a clash of that kind as a decade that disturbs whatever the pillar was doing. Here the pillar is the month, which carries the arena, the standing, and the stretch of life the chart says he was born into.

It does a second thing at once. 申 sits in the day pillar and 辰 sits in the hour pillar, and 子 with them makes 申子辰, the three-harmony combination of Water. Water produces Wood, so the same decade that clashes the month branch also completes a Resource combination across the day and hour.

戊 is Yang Earth and 子 is a Water branch, and Earth controls Water, so the 偏财 stem of the decade covers the branch it sits on. The Wealth star holds the surface while the Resource runs underneath.

For this chart the two readings sit together rather than closing each other out. A decade that moves the arena while feeding the Day Master is read as a decade of rebuilding somewhere else.

The window is on the calendar. What it holds is read, not scheduled.

Six ten-year windows cover the fifty-five years in that table. Each step is checkable: the pillars come from a date, the Ten Gods come from the day stem, the windows come from the month pillar and the year's polarity, and the clashes come from the branches themselves.

Try it on a year. A man born in 1990 carries 庚, a Yang stem, so his cycles run forward from his month pillar. A woman born the same year runs them backward from the same pillar. One date, one month pillar, two directions, and the two ladders part company from the first decade.
