Day Master in BaZi: How to Find Yours and Read It

The Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of the day column, the third column from the left. Some printed charts run the same four columns right to left, so the day pillar sits in a different place on the page. The stem still belongs to the day column. Readers call it the reference point because the other seven characters get described in relation to it.

Readers also call it 日元 (rì yuán), the day origin, and 日主 (rì zhǔ), the day ruler. The English term Day Master comes from the second one.

Some English sites write the term closed up as daymaster. Both spellings point at the same character in the same position.

Ten Heavenly Stems exist. Each carries one element and one polarity: Wood as 甲 Jiǎ (Yang) and 乙 Yǐ (Yin), Fire as 丙 Bǐng and 丁 Dīng, Earth as 戊 Wù and 己 Jǐ, Metal as 庚 Gēng and 辛 Xīn, Water as 壬 Rén and 癸 Guǐ.

The day stem changes value every ten days, which makes it the fastest-moving position in the chart. Your own stem was fixed at the moment you were born, and two people born nine days apart can still hold different Day Masters.

A year animal takes twelve years to come round again, so the two labels run on different clocks.

The stem gives you two pieces of information before any interpretation starts.

The element.

Each stem carries one of the Five Elements. At its simplest: Wood grows, Fire rises, Earth bears, Metal cuts, Water flows. A 甲 stem and a 庚 stem get read on different terms because growing and cutting are different jobs.

The polarity.

Yang and Yin split each element into two temperaments. 甲 and 乙 both carry Wood. Practitioners read 甲 as the Wood of a standing tree and 乙 as the Wood of a vine.

A reading then works outward. The chart shows which elements support your stem and which contend with it, and the season your stem sits in changes how much weight each one carries.

A Wood Day Master born in spring sits in a Wood season, where the surrounding characters reinforce the stem. The same stem born in autumn sits in a Metal season, where the surrounding characters press against it. Readers treat those two charts as different problems.
