Key takeaways (~30 sec)
- Cancer, 5°25′ inside the sign, with the solstice 5.7 days behind her and Leo 25.8 days ahead.
- The Rooster: 1993 is 癸酉, and the nearest year boundary is 142 days away, so both boundary systems agree.
- One recorded time — 21:16, graded A, from memory — gives two hour pillars: 癸亥 on the clock, 壬戌 after conversion.
- The conversion is 83 minutes: 60 of daylight saving, 20.3 of longitude, 2.5 of equation of time.
- Strength stays in the same band (3.1 and 3.9), but the hour stem moves from Direct Wealth to Indirect Wealth.
Cancer is settled, and so is the Rooster
Ariana Grande was born on 26 June 1993 in Boca Raton, Florida, at 21:16 local time. Two of the three answers people come for are fixed by the date. The third is fixed by nothing, and that is what the rest of this page is about.
The Sun stood at 95.42° of ecliptic longitude at that moment: 5°25′ inside Cancer, which opens at 90°. The boundary behind her, the June solstice, had passed 5 days and 16 hours earlier. The boundary ahead, the start of Leo at 120°, was 25 days and 18 hours away. Across the whole local day the Sun moved from 94.57° to 95.49° — less than one degree, because a degree is roughly what a day of solar motion is worth. No reading of the clock, and no reading of the record, moves her out of Cancer.
The Chinese animal is 1993's, 癸酉 Gui You — the Rooster. This is the one place where the two systems could disagree, because a Chinese year can turn at the lunar new year or at Li Chun, and those two dates can fall weeks apart. Here they do not matter: the nearest boundary in either system is 142 days back (Li Chun, 4 February 1993) and the next is 223 days ahead. The lunar new year fell on 23 January 1993 and 10 February 1994. Every candidate line puts this date inside the same year.
The hour has two answers, and only one record
Most birth-time arguments are between two documents. This one is not. There is a single published time — 21:16, graded A by Astro-Databank, with the source field reading "from memory" — and it still produces two different hour pillars, depending on whether you convert it to true solar time first.
Read straight off the clock, 21:16 falls in 亥, the branch that runs from 21:00 to 23:00. Converted to local solar time it becomes 19:53, which falls in 戌, the branch before it. One record, two charts.
That is worth pausing on, because it changes what kind of uncertainty this is. In the Taylor Swift chart, nobody could settle the hour because the evidence itself conflicted: two published times, 199 minutes apart. Here the evidence does not conflict — it is one number. What splits is the method. A page that picks an hour here is not choosing between sources, it is choosing between conventions, and it should say which one it picked.
This page reports the converted hour as its main reading, because that is the convention this site uses everywhere, and it keeps the uncorrected one beside it, because the distance between the two is the interesting part.
Eighty-three minutes, itemised
The conversion is not one adjustment but three, and each one can be checked separately.
| Component | Amount | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Daylight saving | −60 min | Florida was on Eastern Daylight Time on 26 June 1993, an hour ahead of its standard time |
| Longitude | −20.3 min | Boca Raton sits at 80°05′ W, 5.08° west of the 75° W standard meridian; a degree of longitude is four minutes of time |
| Equation of time | −2.5 min | In late June the apparent Sun runs slow against the mean clock |
| Total | −82.8 min | 21:16 becomes 19:53 |
What makes the total decisive is not its size but where it starts. 21:16 sits 16 minutes past the 21:00 boundary. Any correction of 83 minutes has to cross that line; this one crosses it and lands 67 minutes inside 戌, with 53 minutes of room before the branch's own start at 19:00.
Taken apart one term at a time, the result is more interesting than the sum:
| Conversion applied | Time | Branch |
|---|---|---|
| None | 21:16 | 亥 |
| Daylight saving only | 20:16 | 戌 |
| Longitude only | 20:56 | 戌 |
| Equation of time only | 21:14 | 亥 |
| All three | 19:53 | 戌 |
The equation of time alone cannot move her: 21:14 is still 亥. Either of the other two terms can. So the answer is not decided by precision — a two-minute term is not capable of deciding it — but by whether the correction is made at all.
Why Boca Raton sits far enough west to matter
Time zones are 15° wide and their clocks are set at the middle. Anyone living near a zone's western edge is already living on a clock that runs ahead of the Sun, and the Florida east coast is close to the eastern zone's western limit.
Boca Raton is at 80°05′ W. The standard meridian for Eastern Time is 75° W, the line that runs through Philadelphia, so the city sits 5.08° west of the line its clock is set from. At four minutes per degree that is 20.3 minutes of clock error before any daylight-saving change is counted. Add the summer hour and the gap reaches 80 minutes.
The total comes to 83 minutes, close to seven tenths of an hour branch — each branch is 120 minutes wide. A birth in the middle of the zone would have needed no more than the 60-minute daylight-saving term and would very likely have read out the same branch as the clock did. Hers needed both terms, and it needed them at a recorded time that sat only 16 minutes inside the next branch.
What the two hour pillars actually do
Here is the part worth seeing. The two readings do not merely relabel the hour; they attach a different relationship to the same Day Master, and they shift the balance of the whole chart.
| Clock 21:16 | True solar 19:53 | |
|---|---|---|
| Hour pillar | 癸亥 Gui Hai | 壬戌 Ren Xu |
| Hour stem against 戊 | 正财 Direct Wealth | 偏财 Indirect Wealth |
| Day Master strength | strong (3.1) | strong (3.9) |
| Element count | 1 Wood, 1 Fire, 2 Earth, 1 Metal, 3 Water | 1 Wood, 1 Fire, 3 Earth, 1 Metal, 2 Water |
Both readings agree that the Day Master is 戊, Yang Earth, and both call the chart strong. That is not the usual outcome: in the Swift chart the same question moved the strength from weak to neutral, and one band change like that rewrites every statement downstream of it. Here the band holds and only the margin moves, 3.1 to 3.9.
The hour stem is a different matter. 癸 read against 戊 is 正财, Direct Wealth: water that Yang Earth controls, of the opposite polarity. 壬 read against 戊 is 偏财, Indirect Wealth: the same element, the same kind of relationship, the other polarity. The difference is not "wealth or no wealth" — it is the flavour of one relationship, and different schools read those two as different temperaments rather than different fortunes.
The element count moves with the branch, because that is where the extra character sits: 戌 carries Yang Earth and adds to Earth, 亥 carries Yang Water and adds to Water. Wood, Fire and Metal stay at one each either way, since they come from the four characters the date fixes.
What does not move
Three pillars survive the argument entirely: the year 癸酉, the month 戊午, the day 戊寅. 26 June falls after 芒种, so the month branch is 午; 1993 is 癸酉; and the day pillar is the same under both readings because neither time is anywhere near a day boundary, which the next section puts in numbers.
That is more than the Swift page could offer. There the month and the year were fixed but the strength band was not, so every statement that leaned on strength had to be left provisional. Here the Day Master and the strength band both hold, and the ten-year cycles derive from the month pillar, which does not move either. What depends on the hour is the hour pillar itself and the palace it fills — not the architecture of the chart.
One more thing holds: under either reading the chart has one Wood, one Fire and one Metal. No hour changes those three counts, because none of them comes from the hour branch.
The Sun gives the same number in both systems
The two systems in this article are usually presented as rivals. They share one input: where the Sun is.
This site computes that position from the same ephemeris it uses for the solar terms, and for 26 June 1993 at 01:16 UTC it returns 95.42°. A Western ephemeris for the same instant gives the Sun at 5°25′ of Cancer, which is 95.42°. That is not a coincidence and not a translation: it is one astronomical fact written two ways, once as degrees of ecliptic longitude and once as a sign plus arcminutes.
The twelve sign boundaries fall at 30° multiples, and the twelve 中气 fall at the same multiples — 0° is the March equinox and the start of Aries, 90° is the June solstice and the start of Cancer, 180° is the September equinox and Libra, 270° is the December solstice and Capricorn. Cancer begins at the solstice. That is why the sign on this page is not looked up from a table of dates but measured from the Sun's position.
For her the question is settled twice over: 5°25′ inside Cancer at the recorded moment, and 0.91° of solar travel across the whole of 26 June in Boca Raton. There is no hour of that day that produces a different sign.
Why the day pillar is not in question here
The Chinese day turns at 23:00, not at midnight, which makes 子 the only branch that straddles two calendar days. A birth inside it can belong to either day depending on how the record was kept, and that is where most birth-time arguments actually bite.
Neither of her readings is close to it. 21:16 falls 1 hour 44 minutes before the turn; 19:53 falls 3 hours 7 minutes before it. Even a record wrong by an hour leaves the day pillar at 戊寅. Whatever else is unsettled on this page, that pillar is not.
The time has a source, and the source is worth naming
Astro-Databank grades birth times, and the grades describe the evidence rather than the accuracy. AA means a birth certificate or an official record. A means a news report, a biography, or a statement by the person or someone close to them. DD means the sources conflict.
Ariana Grande's entry carries an A, and its source field reads "from memory". A minute-precise time from memory is a particular kind of evidence: people remember that a birth was in the evening, and roughly when; very few remember the minute. The number may well be right. What it cannot be is independent of the person who supplied it.
That matters more here than it usually would, because the two hour pillars sit 83 minutes apart while the record sits 16 minutes inside a boundary. A memory that had been off by twenty minutes the other way would have produced the same pillar under both methods. Hers is the case where the record is precise, and the precision is what creates the split.
Questions this page answers
**What is Ariana Grande's zodiac sign?** Cancer. The Sun was at 95.42° of ecliptic longitude at 21:16 local time — 5°25′ inside the sign, 5.7 days past the solstice that opens it, with Leo 25.8 days away.
**What is her Chinese zodiac animal?** The Rooster. 1993 is 癸酉, and 26 June is 142 days from the nearest year boundary, so the lunar-new-year and Li-Chun systems agree.
**Why does this page give two hour pillars?** Because the record is one time — 21:16 — and converting it to true solar time moves it 83 minutes, from 亥 into 戌. The disagreement is about method, not about evidence.
**Which hour pillar does the site use?** 壬戌, the converted one, because that is the convention here everywhere. The uncorrected 癸亥 is shown beside it, because a reader checking the arithmetic will arrive at it.
**Can the birth time change her sun sign?** No. The Sun moved 0.91° across the whole of 26 June in Boca Raton, and the sign is about 5° deep at that point.
