Beyoncé was born on 4 September 1981 in Houston, Texas. The birth certificate reproduced in the Cowboy Carter art book in April 2025 gives 21:47 central daylight time.

At that instant the Sun stood at 162.459° of ecliptic longitude, which is 12°27′ into Virgo. Libra begins at 180°, and the Sun crossed that line at 21:56 on 22 September in Houston — 10:56 on the 23rd in Hong Kong, where the Observatory’s calendar prints the day as 秋分. That is eighteen days after her birth.

The four birth times that have been published for her span seventeen hours, from 04:37 to 21:47. Across that window the Sun moves 0.69°, from 11°46′ to 12°27′. Both ends sit more than eleven degrees from either edge of the sign. The answer to the question is Virgo, and no reading of the hour can make it anything else.

One birth, four published times

Her hour has a paper trail, and the paper disagrees with itself.

An autobiography of Destiny’s Child was once the cited source for 04:37; a later researcher went through the book and could not find the time in it. An IMDb entry gave 10:00, with no source behind it. In 2003 the AstroTwins reported that during a reading she phoned her mother and came back with “sometime in the 11am hour”, which the record later carried as 11:30. Then in April 2025 a photograph of her birth certificate appeared in the Cowboy Carter art book, and the hour became 21:47.

Astro-Databank holds that reading at AA, the grade it reserves for a birth record in hand. Before the certificate surfaced, the same entry had been downgraded to X — date only — because the earlier claims could not be reconciled with each other. The sign was never in question through any of this. Only the hour was.

What the four times change

Three of the four pillars do not care. 辛酉 for the year, 丙申 for the month, 乙酉 for the day: identical at 04:37 and at 21:47, because the date and the solar term fix them. None of the four readings lands within twenty minutes of midnight, so the day does not roll over either.

The hour is where the disagreement lives. 04:37 gives 戊寅, 10:00 gives 庚辰, 11:30 gives 辛巳, 21:47 gives 丙戌. Four branches, and four different relations to the day master 乙: Direct Wealth, Direct Officer, Seven Killings, Hurting Officer.

Two readers working from two different pages are not reading one chart with a rounding error. In the 11:30 version the hour adds a second Seven Killings on top of the year stem. In the 21:47 version it adds a second Hurting Officer instead.

The three pillars that hold

辛酉 is yin metal over the rooster. 丙申 is yang fire over the monkey; the Sun crossed 立秋 at 135° on 7 August and 白露 at 165° on 7 September, so 申 holds for every hour on 4 September. 乙酉 is yin wood over the rooster, and 乙 is the day master — the character the whole chart is read against.

Both roosters 酉 carry only 辛 in their hidden stems, which makes her day branch and her year branch Seven Killings by main qi. That is the part of the chart which four conflicting records cannot touch.

The clock correction does not move it either. Houston sits at 95°22′ west, twenty-one minutes of solar time beyond the meridian its standard clock implies; September clocks there also ran an hour ahead on daylight saving, and the equation of time for early September gives a minute and a half back. Net: 80 minutes. Measured against the Sun, 21:47 becomes 20:27 — still inside 戌, the same branch the clock gave.

Her month ends fifteen days before her sign does

At 21:47 on 4 September the month pillar had 2.6 days left. 白露 falls at 17:38 UTC on 7 September, which is 12:38 in Houston and 01:38 on the 8th in Hong Kong, where the Observatory prints it. From birth to that line: two days and fifteen hours.

The sign had eighteen days. The gap is structural rather than a quirk of 1981. The twelve signs begin at the 中气 — 0° Aries at the spring equinox, 90° Cancer at the solstice — while the twelve month branches begin at the 節氣, fifteen degrees earlier. Virgo runs from 150° to 180°; 申 runs from 135° to 165°. Every sign boundary sits exactly fifteen degrees, roughly fifteen days, after the month boundary that precedes it.

So 4 September 1981 is 12°27′ into Virgo and three days from the end of 申 at the same moment, on the same ecliptic. The two calendars are not in conflict. They are cut at different degrees.

What the 21:47 chart reads like

Take the certificate and the chart is 辛酉 丙申 乙酉 丙戌. Yin wood in a metal month, four of the eight characters metal, no water among the stems, and a body the engine scores at −6.3: weak, asking for water and wood.

The two Hurting Officer stems are not equal. The month 丙 sits on 申, whose hidden stems are 庚, 壬 and 戊 — metal, water, earth, no fire — so it speaks with nothing under it. The hour 丙 sits on 戌, which keeps 丁 in its storehouse. One of the two has ground. If the 11:30 record were right, that ground would disappear and the hour would read 辛巳: a second Seven Killings where the Hurting Officer now stands.

That is the whole cost of the wrong hour. Not the sign — the sign never moves. The sentence you can say about her does.
