Key takeaways (~30 sec)

  • Leo, at 18°23′ of the sign — twelve days short of Virgo, well clear of any boundary a birth time could move her across.
  • 17:25 Pacific daylight time corrects to 16:27 solar time: 53 minutes of longitude plus 5 minutes of equation of time.
  • The Sun crossed 135° at 11:36 UTC on 7 August 1997, so the month pillar is 戊申 under either reading; the day pillar is 甲申.
  • Clock time puts her hour in 酉 (癸酉, Direct Resource); solar time puts it in 申 (壬申, Indirect Resource).
  • Three 申 in her chart on solar time, two on the clock — the difference is a daylight-saving statute, not an astronomical one.

Leo, with twelve days of margin

Kylie Jenner was born on 10 August 1997 in Los Angeles. The published birth data gives 17:25 Pacific daylight time, five and a half hours before midnight.

On that reading her Sun sits at 18°23′ of Leo, a little past the middle of the sign. Virgo does not open until the Sun has covered another 11.6°: on the evening of 22 August in Los Angeles, the 23rd in Hong Kong, where the Observatory's calendar prints it as 处暑. That is twelve days after her birth.

Between sunrise and midnight the Sun covers less than one degree, so no reading of the birth time can carry her across a twelve-day gap. Her sun sign is Leo, and that part is settled.

The earlier pages in this series argued the opposite

Three previous pages here — Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Selena Gomez — reached the same conclusion by the same route: the date fixes the sun sign, and whatever the birth time does, the sign stays where it is.

Selena's page was the near miss. Her Sun stood 29°56′ into Cancer, four arcminutes short of Leo, and the boundary fell at 09:00 on her birthday. A birth time three hours later would have moved her.

Kylie's page inverts the shape. Her sign has twelve days of margin; her hour pillar has thirty-three minutes. And unlike Selena's, the reason is not a doubtful record. Astro-Databank grades this birth time AA, which means a birth certificate rather than a recollection. The record is as good as such things get. The clock is still wrong.

Where the 58 minutes go

Clock time in Los Angeles is not solar time, and two corrections sit between them.

The first is longitude. Daylight time in California runs on UTC−7, the nominal clock of 105° W. Los Angeles sits at 118°14′ W, thirteen degrees further west, where the Sun arrives about 53 minutes later.

The second is the equation of time. On 10 August the Sun runs roughly five minutes behind the mean sun.

53 plus 5 is 58. At 17:25 on the dial, the Sun over Los Angeles is where a dial would show 16:27. Run the birth data through the chart engine on this site and it returns exactly that: effective local 16:27, offset −58 minutes.

One record, two hour pillars

The year and month pillars hold under both readings, and the reason is worth a line: 节气 are instants, not local dates. The Sun crossed 135° at 11:36 UTC on 7 August 1997 — 04:36 in Los Angeles — so 立秋 had already passed and the month pillar is 戊申 Wu Shen either way.

The day pillar is 甲申 Jia Shen, a 甲 yang-wood day master.

The hour pillar is where the record splits. 17:25 falls in 酉 You, the branch running 17:00–19:00. 16:27 falls in 申 Shen, 15:00–17:00. On a 甲 day the stem follows the branch: 申 takes 壬 Ren, 酉 takes 癸 Gui.

The 十神 line is the ordinary consequence of swapping a branch. The last line is not.

The third 申

Read the chart in solar time and 申 appears three times: 戊申 in the month, 甲申 in the day, 壬申 in the hour. Read it on the clock and 申 appears twice.

The third one is manufactured by a statute. California moves its dials forward an hour each spring. On standard time, born at the same moment on the same date, the clock in the delivery room would have read 16:25 — already 申, already 壬申. Nothing about the Sun changed. Only the number on the dial did.

Daylight time carries no astronomical content. It exists to push an hour of summer light out of the morning and into the evening, and it is adopted by legislatures one state at a time. It still decides the hour pillar of everyone born inside that shifted hour, on a summer evening, in a state that observes it.

What does not move, and how to check it

Three pillars survive every reading: year 丁丑 Ding Chou, month 戊申 Wu Shen, day 甲申 Jia Shen. The dispute is confined to the hour.

The margin is 33 minutes. Solar time 16:27 sits 33 minutes short of the 申/酉 boundary at 17:00, so the hour pillar flips only if the recorded time is more than 33 minutes later than the record claims. At AA grade the record is a certificate, and 33 minutes of error in a certificate is not a plausible failure.

The whole chain can be checked in three steps. Look up the Sun's longitude on 10 August 1997: 138.39°, which is 18.39° into Leo. Take the longitude term, (118.245 − 105) × 4 = 53 minutes. Subtract the equation of time for that date, about 5 minutes. What is left is 16:27.

Questions this page answers

**What is Kylie Jenner's zodiac sign?** Leo, at 18°23′ of the sign, twelve days short of Virgo. It does not depend on her birth time.

**Does her birth time change her sun sign?** No. It changes her hour pillar, from 癸酉 Gui You on the clock to 壬申 Ren Shen in solar time.

**Why do some charts give her three 申?** Because a chart run on true solar time places her in the 申 hour. On clock time she is in 酉, and 申 drops to two.

**How solid is 17:25?** Astro-Databank grades it AA — a certificate, not a memory — and the hour pillar would need an error of more than 33 minutes to flip.
