Key takeaways (~30 sec)

  • 午 and 未 are one of the six 六合 pairs, and they also share the southern 三会 — two relations at once, which no other animal has in 2027.
  • Nine Horse years are still living: 1930, 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002, 2014, 2026.
  • 1966 and 2026 are both 丙午: the same pillar sixty years apart.
  • 2026 was a Horse year, so 2027 is the paired year immediately after every Horse's own year.
  • Births from 4 to 16 February 2026 are Horse by the pillar and Snake by the popular count.

The short answer

2027 is 丁未, the Fire Goat. It opens on 6 February, and the pillar boundary that a chart actually uses falls two days earlier, on 4 February at 09:46 Beijing time.

The Horse is 午, the branch that also names the hour from 11:00 to 13:00. In 2027 the Horse does not clash with the year and is not in Ben Ming Nian. It sits in 六合, six harmony, paired with 未 — one of six fixed pairings in the branch system.

It also does something no other animal does in 2027: 午 and 未 both belong to 巳午未, the directional meeting of the south. The Horse therefore meets the year through two different relations at once, 六合 and 三会.

Nine Horse years still have living people: 1930, 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002, 2014 and 2026. The youngest of them turns one during 2027.

What 六合 is, and why the Horse holds two relations at once

六合 is a closed set of six pairings. Each branch pairs with exactly one other branch, and the pairing does not change from cycle to cycle:

PairBranches
子丑Rat and Ox
寅亥Tiger and Pig
卯戌Rabbit and Dog
辰酉Dragon and Rooster
巳申Snake and Monkey
午未Horse and Goat

That table is the whole rule. A year whose branch is 未 pairs with 午 and with nothing else, so in 2027 every Horse is in 六合 and no other animal is.

The second relation is the one usually left out. 巳午未 are the three branches of the southern quadrant, and the classical system groups them as 三会, a directional meeting — three branches that share a season and an element rather than one that pairs with another. 午 is the middle of that group. 未 is its end. So the Horse meets 2027 twice: once as a pair, once as a member of the same directional set.

The two relations are not the same thing said twice. 六合 is symmetric and one to one. 三会 is a group of three, and it describes shared ground — the Horse and the Goat year both sit in the fire direction, with 午 as fire proper and 未 as the earth that fire produces. That is why the pairing is described as generative rather than balanced: read by element, the Horse is the one supplying and the year is the one receiving.

Whether that reading means anything for a given person is a separate question, and the next section says why.

Nine Horse years, and the age each one turns in 2027

The ages below are the age a person turns during 2027, counted from the birthday. The last column is 虚岁, the nominal count that starts at one at birth and adds a year at each new year rather than at each birthday.

BornPillarTurns in 2027虚岁
1930庚午9798
1942壬午8586
1954甲午7374
1966丙午6162
1978戊午4950
1990庚午3738
2002壬午2526
2014甲午1314
2026丙午12

Two rows in that table are the same pillar sixty years apart: 1966 and 2026 are both 丙午. There are only five Horse pillars — 庚午, 壬午, 甲午, 丙午, 戊午 — because the stem and the branch advance together, so a Horse is only ever one of five combinations, and each one recurs every sixty years rather than every twelve.

One consequence is easy to miss. 2026 was itself a Horse year, so every Horse on this list spent 2026 inside Ben Ming Nian — their own branch returning. 2027 is the year immediately after that, and it is the 六合 year. The sequence 值 then 合, own year then paired year, is a structural feature of the wheel rather than anything specific to the Horse: the animal one position before the year is always the 六合 partner, and it is always the animal that had the previous year.

What the pairing does not say

六合 is a statement about two branches. It is not a statement about a person, a year's outcome, or a direction of travel.

Three things it does not do:

It does not flatten the nine birth years into one. 1954 is 甲午 — wood over fire. 1990 is 庚午 — metal over fire. 2002 is 壬午 — water over fire. Those are three different charts that happen to share a branch, and a system that treats the year branch alone as the reading has thrown away the stem, the month, the day and the hour to keep one of eight characters.

It does not run for the whole of 2027. A pillar year begins at 立春, not at midnight on 1 January and not at the festival. Anything said about "the Horse in 2027" refers to the window that opens at 09:46 on 4 February.

It does not survive being turned into a forecast. The pairing is the same in every 未 year — 1967, 2027, 2087. If a page tells you what the pairing will produce this time and did not tell you what it produced in 1967, it is not describing the pairing, it is describing an audience.

What the relation can support is narrower and more useful: it tells you which of the twelve positions the Horse occupies this year, and it tells you that the position is one of the two that the branch system labels as pairing rather than conflict.

Why no 太岁 ritual is listed for the Horse in 2027

Temples that publish an annual 安太岁 list publish it for the animals in 犯太岁, and 犯太岁 in 2027 covers four animals: the Goat in 值, the Ox in 冲, the Dog in 破 and 刑, and the Rat in 害. The Horse is not on that list, and this is not a matter of degree.

The four listed relations are the ones the tradition treats as needing something done — a lamp, a paper tablet, a red cord, a visit. 六合 and 三合 are not among them, so there is no standard ritual attached, and a page that invents one for the Horse is selling a remedy for a condition the system does not recognise.

That cuts both ways. It is also the reason the Horse year pages you will find elsewhere are thin: with no ritual to describe and no trouble to warn about, there is nothing to write except a forecast. The material that is actually specific to the Horse in 2027 is structural — two relations instead of one, a pillar that repeats every sixty years, and a boundary date that decides which of two animals a January birth belongs to.

The 2026 seam: twelve days that are Horse by one count and Snake by another

The boundary question matters more for the Horse than for most animals, because the most recent Horse year is the one that just passed, and its two boundaries did not line up.

In 2026, 立春 fell on 4 February and Chinese New Year on 17 February. Anyone born between those two dates is 丙午 — Horse — by the pillar count, because the pillar changed at 立春. By the popular count, which changes at the festival, they are still 乙巳, Snake, for another thirteen days.

So a child born on 10 February 2026 is a Horse on a chart and a Snake on a birthday card. Both answers are produced by rules; the rules answer different questions.

The same seam exists in reverse for other animals. In 2023 the festival came first, 22 January, and 立春 followed on 4 February, so births in that gap are Rabbit by the popular count and Tiger by the pillar. Which direction the gap runs depends on the year, and it cannot be read off the animal.

For 2027 the order is the same as 2026: 立春 on 4 February, the festival on 6 February. A birth in those two days is Goat by the pillar and, by the popular count, still Horse.

Check which side of the line you fall on

If you already know your birth date and time, the check is one page: a chart that applies the pillar boundary to the minute. It will tell you your year pillar, which is the only thing that decides whether you are a Horse at all.

If you are checking on behalf of someone born in early February of a Horse year — 1930, 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002, 2014, 2026 — the date alone is not enough. The hour decides it, because 立春 is an instant and the answer flips at 09:46 on 4 February, not at the start of the day.

What this page has not done is tell you what 2027 will bring. That is deliberate. The relation between 午 and 未 is a fixed fact you can check against any branch table; a statement about what it will produce for a particular person is a different kind of claim, and it is not one this page makes.
