Key takeaways (~30 sec)

  • In 2027 the Rat meets the year branch 未 through 害, which is derived rather than declared: 子 is in harmony with 丑, and 未 clashes 丑.
  • Run the derivation across all six harmony pairs and you get twelve candidate lines that deduplicate to exactly six harm pairs, each appearing twice — nothing left over, nothing missing.
  • Whether any of it lands on you depends on one thing: does your chart carry 丑 in the month, day or hour pillar.
  • In 2027 four branches meet the year — Goat by value, Ox by clash, Dog by destruction, Rat by harm — and the Rat's is the only single relation among them.
  • The nine Rat birth years run from 1924 to 2020. The boundary between lunar new year and the start of spring is real, and in 1924 the two fell nine hours and forty-nine minutes apart.

The short answer

2027 is a 丁未 year, fire over earth, the Goat. If your year branch is 子, the tables put you and 未 in a relation called 害, which English usually renders as harm. Every page you will find on this says the Rat and the Goat do not mix.

That sentence is not wrong. It leaves out the part that decides anything.

害 is not a hostility between two animals. It is derived. It describes what happens to a harmony when a third branch removes one end of it. 子 and 丑 form a harmony pair. In 2027, 未 clashes 丑. The Rat is not being attacked by the Goat. The Rat's partner is taken away, and the Goat is standing where the Ox used to be.

So the narrower and more useful version is this: in 2027, what decides whether any of it lands on you is not the Goat. It is whether your chart holds an Ox.

This page covers the pair, the derivation, the nine Rat birth years with their ages, and the one branch to look for in your own chart. It does not say what will happen to you during the year, and nothing below is a forecast.

Nine Rat years, and the age each one reaches in 2027

Every Rat year carries 子, so 2027 stands in the same relation to all nine. The stem and branch pair repeats every sixty years, which is why 1924 and 1984 are both 甲子, and 1936 and 1996 are both 丙子.

Birth yearYear pillarTurns in 2027
1924甲子103
1936丙子91
1948戊子79
1960庚子67
1972壬子55
1984甲子43
1996丙子31
2008戊子19
2020庚子7

Ages are counted as reached during 2027, so a birthday still ahead means one year less.

One row needs a note, because it is the row most likely to be wrong about itself. In 2020 the start of spring fell at 17:03 on 4 February and the first day of the lunar year was 25 January. Someone born inside those ten days and seventeen hours is a Rat under the national standard and a Pig on a cast chart. The same split runs through every row above; 2020 is only the one whose two ends are easiest to look up.

Same animal, different weight: is there an Ox in your chart

This is where nine Rats stop being one group.

The relation in 2027 sits between the year's branch 未 and your year branch 子. That much is identical for all nine birth years. But a chart has four branches — year, month, day, hour — and 丑 can sit in any of the other three.

The month branch is 丑 from 小寒, around 5 January, to 立春, around 4 February, and anyone born in that window carries an Ox in the month, which the classical reading treats as the heaviest of the four positions after the day. The day branch is 丑 once every sixty days on a fixed cycle, and the hour branch is 丑 between 01:00 and 03:00 local solar time.

If one of those is 丑, then in 2027 the year's 未 is doing two jobs at once: it takes the partner of your year branch, and it clashes a branch you actually carry. If none of them is 丑, the harm is a relation on paper. It has not stopped existing — 未 and 子 do not stop being a harm pair — but there is no harmony in your chart for the year to break.

That is the fork worth taking before you read anything else about 2027. Look for the Ox first.

Where the six harm pairs actually come from

The harm table is short and every source prints it as a list: 子未, 丑午, 寅巳, 卯辰, 申亥, 酉戌. What almost none of them show is that it is not six independent rules. It is generated, and you can run the generation yourself with two tables you already have.

Take the six harmony pairs. Take the clash table, where each branch pairs with the one opposite it. For each harmony pair, clash one end of it, and whichever branch did the clashing is in harm with the other end.

Harmony pairClash one endHarm pair

Twelve lines in, six pairs out, and each of the six appears exactly twice. Nothing is left over. Nothing is missing.

That closure is why the table can be printed as fact rather than as convention. It is not an extra set of rules sitting beside the harmonies; it is the shadow the harmonies cast when something gets in the way.

What the Ming text says that the modern pages leave out

The derivation above is not a modern reconstruction. The 三命通会, compiled in the Ming dynasty, states it in one line: 子与丑合而未冲之,故子与未害 — 子 and 丑 are in harmony, 未 clashes 丑, therefore 子 is in harm with 未.

Two further things in that text are missing from most retellings, and both change the picture.

The first is the name the text gives this specific pair: 势家相害, harm between two houses of equal strength. The reason given is that 未 is earth at full strength and 子 is water at full strength, so neither gives way. That is not one side damaging another. It is a standoff, and the English word harm points at the wrong half of it.

The second is how the text describes the onset: 子未直上穿心,与冲合恩未结而仇已生. The favour was never completed and the grudge already exists. A clash is two branches arriving at the same point from opposite sides. A harm is a meeting that never takes place, and then gets read as a loss.

One more correction, offered as a correction and not as a settled fact. The character 六 in 六害 is read two ways. The Ming text opens with 六,六亲;害,损也, where six means the six relations of kin. The modern reading takes it as six pairs. Both are in circulation and this page does not adjudicate.

Three steps, and a second table that fails the same test

The check is short enough to do before you finish reading this.

  1. Get your four branches. If you do not have them, a chart from your date, hour and place will produce them, and the year branch is the one that names your zodiac sign.
  2. Look for 丑 among the other three. Month: born between roughly 5 January and 4 February. Day: 丑 recurs on a fixed sixty-day cycle. Hour: 01:00 to 03:00.
  3. Note which pillar the Ox sits in. In the classical reading month and day carry more weight than hour, and a clash against the day pillar is read differently from one against the hour.

Now the part that makes the method worth anything. Run the same procedure on the destruction table — 子酉, 卯午, 辰丑, 未戌, 寅亥, 巳申 — and it does not come out. Twelve lines, and they do not close onto those six.

So the generation is a property of the harm table specifically, not a general rule for how branch relations are built. Anyone who tells you the destruction table is derived the same way should be asked to show the twelve lines.

That failure is useful in the other direction too: it means the harm table's construction is checkable, and the destruction table's is not, at least not by this route.

Harm is not clash: what 2027 does to four branches

Four branches meet the year in 2027, and they do not meet it the same way.

AnimalBranchRelation to 未
Goat未value, 值
Ox丑clash 冲, and punishment 刑
Dog戌punishment 刑, and destruction 破
Rat子harm 害

A Rat is on the shortest version of this list: one relation, and it is the one the classical texts describe least directly. A Rat in 2027 is not clashing the year, not punishing it, not breaking it.

The English phrase "offending Tai Sui" folds all four rows into one. Chinese keeps them apart because the tables behind them are separate tables with separate derivations, which is the whole subject of the 2027 Tai Sui page.

Read the four rows as four different configurations, not four grades of bad. The Rat's row is the one where a partner goes missing, and a missing partner is a much smaller claim than an injury.

What this page cannot say

Three limits, and one of them is the reason to be careful with the rest.

First, a relation between two branches is a statement about two positions in a fixed cycle of twelve. It is not a statement about a person. The texts that list these relations describe configurations to handle — which direction not to break ground in, which month to keep clear — not verdicts on a life.

Second, harm is the least supported of the five relations. Clash and punishment have tables that agree across sources. The harm table's derivation is stated and, as shown above, reproducible. Its weight is not stated anywhere comparable. Any page telling you a Rat will have a bad 2027 is reading a position as an outcome.

Third, the boundary. Nine Rat years is a range of ninety-six years, and 1924 and 2020 share one branch and nothing else.

Three claims go around that this page does not support. Each is listed below so you can check it against the tables above.

  • Rat and Goat should not marry. Harm is one layer of a derivation, and marriage compatibility is not what the tables were written for.
  • Every Rat offends Tai Sui in 2027 and needs a ceremony. Four branches meet the year and the Rat meets it in the mildest of the four ways.
  • Rats rank somewhere on a 2027 fortune list. There is no such ranking in any classical text. A ranking needs a measure, and no measure exists.
