Key takeaways (~30 sec)

  • Cancer, 29°56′ into the sign — four arcminutes short of Leo, which is 101 minutes of solar motion.
  • The boundary is 09:00:31 CDT on 22 July 1992, the term 大暑; the Hong Kong Observatory calendar prints that same term on her birthday.
  • The Sun moved 0.9° across that whole local day, as it did on the four earlier pages — hers just started 0.067° from a sign line.
  • The 07:19 time is graded C, with a note tracing it to a 2013 tweet naming a hospital in the wrong state; anything past 09:00 makes her a Leo.
  • One record, two hour pillars: 戊辰 on the clock (strong 5.3, no Wood) and 丁卯 in solar time (strong 3.9, one Wood).

Cancer, by four arcminutes

Selena Gomez was born on 22 July 1992 in Grand Prairie, Texas. The published time is 07:19 local, and on that clock reading her Sun is in Cancer — but only just.

The Sun stood at 119.9327° of ecliptic longitude, which is 29°56′ into Cancer, sixteen hundredths of a degree short of the sign's end. Leo begins at 120°, and the Sun was 4.04 arcminutes away from that line. At the speed the Sun was moving that day, 0.9547° per day, four arcminutes is worth 101 minutes.

So the answer to the question people arrive with is Cancer, and it is Cancer with about an hour and a half of margin. This page is mostly about that hour and a half.

The Chinese answer is not close to anything: 1992 is 壬申 Ren Shen, the Monkey, and the nearest year boundary in either system is 169 days back. Two of the three questions have firm answers. The third, unusually, is the one people think is firm.

The only sign in this series that was not safe

The previous four celebrity pages on this site all argued the same thing: whatever the birth time does, it cannot move the sun sign, because the Sun takes a whole day to travel one degree and a sign is thirty degrees deep.

That argument holds by about a factor of thirty, and it fails whenever the birth happens to fall within an hour or two of a boundary. Here is every page in the series side by side, measured the same way — the Sun's longitude at local midnight, and again at the next local midnight:

Selena Gomez22 Jul 1992119.64°120.56°Yes — Cancer into Leo at 09:00

Every row moves about 0.9° in a day, because that is what a day of solar motion is worth in late June and July. The rows differ in only one respect: how far the starting point sits from a multiple of 30°. Four of them are degrees away. Hers was 0.067° away.

That is the whole reason this page exists. The same method that made the other four pages easy makes this one insufficient, and the fix is not a better method — it is saying which hour you are assuming.

Where 09:00 comes from

The sign boundary is not a date on a calendar. It is an instant, and for 1992 it can be pinned down from the same ephemeris this site uses for the solar terms.

Leo opens at 120° of solar longitude, which is the term 大暑 Da Shu. Running the search backwards from 1 July 1992 puts that crossing at 14:00:31 UTC on 22 July, which is 09:00:31 in Grand Prairie daylight time. The Sun entered Cancer at the June solstice, 1992-06-21 03:06:39 UTC, so the crossing was 31.38 days later.

Four samples across the local day show how narrow the window is:

Local time (CDT)Sun longitudeSign
00:00119.6416°Cancer, 29°38′
06:00119.8803°Cancer, 29°53′
12:00120.1190°Leo, 0°07′
23:00120.5567°Leo, 0°33′

The published time, 07:19, sits between the first two rows, forty-one minutes before the crossing at 08:00 would have happened if the Sun moved in even steps. It does not quite: the crossing is at 09:00:31, and the discrepancy is the equation of time plus rounding in the interpolation, not a modelling choice.

There is a second way to check this that does not involve any computation. The Hong Kong Observatory's Gregorian–lunar conversion table for 1992 lists 22 July in the solar-term column as 大暑. The table prints a date, not a time, but 大暑 is exactly the term at which the Sun reaches 120° — which is Leo's first degree. The official calendar and the ephemeris agree on the day; the hour is what this page adds.

The birth time is graded C, and the grade is deserved

Astro-Databank rates birth times by the quality of the evidence behind them: AA for a birth certificate or official record, A for a news report, biography or statement by someone who was there, DD when sources conflict, and C when the source is unknown.

Selena Gomez's entry carries a C, and the source field says "Orig source not known". The entry's own notes trace the 07:19 back to a tweet from March 2013, which gives the time as "7:19 am" and the hospital as Glen Falls — a hospital in New York State, not in Grand Prairie, Texas. The notes then point out that a Texas birth index does record her name, date and county of birth, and does not record a time.

So of the twelve characters in the chart, the ones that depend on the minute are the ones with no official source at all. That is not a scandal, and it is not unusual: most celebrity charts rest on weaker evidence than their readers assume. It matters here only because of the arithmetic. If the recorded time is off by more than 101 minutes in one direction, the sun sign is no longer Cancer.

The series has now covered three different failures. The Taylor Swift page had two published times that contradicted each other, a DD. The Ariana Grande page had one well-graded time and a method that split it in two. This page has one time with no grade worth having, sitting an hour and a half from a line it cannot afford to cross.

One record, two hour pillars, again

Grand Prairie sits at 97°00′ W, in a zone whose clock is set from the 90° meridian, and July is daylight time. Both terms push the local solar time backwards, and the total is large enough to move the hour branch.

Read straight off the clock, 07:19 falls in 辰, the branch that runs from 07:00 to 09:00, giving the hour pillar 戊辰. Converted to true solar time it becomes 05:45, which falls in 卯, the branch that runs from 05:00 to 07:00, giving 丁卯.

ComponentAmountWhy
Daylight saving−60.0 minTexas was on Central Daylight Time on 22 July 1992
Longitude−28.0 min97°00′ W is 7° west of the 90° W meridian; a degree is four minutes
Equation of time−6.1 minIn late July the apparent Sun runs slow
Total−94.1 min07:19 becomes 05:45

The margin is tighter than it looks in either direction. On the clock, 07:19 is nineteen minutes past the 07:00 boundary that starts 辰. On the solar-time axis, 05:45 is fifteen minutes before the 06:00 boundary that ends 卯. Both readings are close to a line, and they are close to different lines.

Three lines, not one

Because the sign boundary and the hour boundaries are all measured from the same clock, they can be laid out on one axis. What follows is the full picture for 22 July 1992 in Grand Prairie, swept across the morning:

Birth time (CDT)Hour pillar on the clockHour pillar in solar timeSun sign
before 06:34丁卯earlier branchCancer
06:34 – 07:00丁卯丁卯Cancer
07:00 – 08:34戊辰丁卯Cancer
08:34 – 09:00戊辰戊辰Cancer
after 09:00戊辰戊辰Leo

The recorded 07:19 sits in the third row, nineteen minutes after it opens. That row is the one where the two hour pillars disagree, and it is 94 minutes wide. The fifth row is the one where the sign changes, and it opens 101 minutes after the recorded time.

Two things follow, and neither is comfortable. First, a record wrong by more than 101 minutes produces a different sign, and a record wrong by more than 19 minutes produces a different hour pillar under one of the two conventions. Second, the two kinds of error are not independent: any single wrong time that breaks one also breaks the other. There is no reading of this chart in which the hour is uncertain but the sign is safe, which is exactly the reassurance the previous four pages could offer.

It is worth saying plainly that this is a coincidence of geography and calendar, not a deep pattern. The Sun crosses a sign boundary once a month; births land near one about as often as the width of that window suggests. She drew the short one.

The line that moves the sign is not the line that moves a pillar

Here is the part that looks like a contradiction and is not. The Sun crossed 120° at 09:00 that morning, and the Chinese chart did not change at all.

The twelve signs start at the twelve 中气 — the odd-numbered terms, the ones that mark the middle of a month: 0° at the March equinox, 90° at the June solstice, 120° at 大暑, 180° at the September equinox. The twelve month branches start at the twelve 节 instead — the even-numbered terms: 315° at 立春 for the year, and within the summer, 105° at 小暑 for 未 and 135° at 立秋 for 申. The two sets of lines are interleaved, fifteen degrees apart.

For this date the engine gives 小暑 at 1992-07-06 20:37 UTC and 立秋 at 1992-08-07 06:24 UTC. Both are weeks away from 22 July. So the month pillar is 丁未 and nothing about it moves at 09:00: the Sun leaving Cancer is a sign event and not a pillar event.

That asymmetry is worth holding onto, because it is routinely blurred. A page that says "the Sun changed sign at 09:00, therefore the chart shifted" has mixed two grids. The sign grid and the pillar grid share one circle and cut it at different points; only one of the two cuts falls on her birthday.

What the two hour pillars change

Clock 07:19True solar 05:45
Hour pillar戊辰 Wu Chen丁卯 Ding Mao
Hour stem against 己劫财 Rob Wealth偏印 Indirect Resource
Day Master strengthstrong (5.3)strong (3.9)
Element count0 Wood, 1 Fire, 4 Earth, 1 Metal, 2 Water1 Wood, 2 Fire, 2 Earth, 1 Metal, 2 Water
Favourable elementsMetal, Water, WoodMetal, Water, Wood

The two readings agree on the Day Master — 己 Ji, yin Earth — and both call the chart strong, though 5.3 and 3.9 are a wider spread than the Ariana Grande page produced. The favourable elements come out the same either way, because the same element is in excess in both readings: four Earth characters on the clock, two Earth plus two Fire in solar time. Either way the advice runs the same direction, towards Metal, Water and Wood.

The counts are where the two charts actually diverge, and one divergence is worth naming. On the clock reading the chart has no Wood at all: 戊辰 adds a Yang Earth stem and an Earth branch to an already Earth-heavy chart, and the four date-fixed characters carry no Wood either. In solar time 卯 is a Wood branch, so the chart has one. A reader who cares whether the chart is missing an element gets opposite answers from the same record depending on which convention is used — and neither answer is wrong.

The hour stem is the other visible difference. 戊 read against 己 is 劫财, Rob Wealth: the same element as the Day Master, opposite polarity, conventionally read as a rival or as a peer. 丁 read against 己 is 偏印, Indirect Resource: Fire that generates Earth, same polarity as the Day Master, conventionally read as unconventional support. Those are not two degrees of one thing; they are different relationships.

What does not move, and how to check it

Three pillars survive every reading: the year 壬申, the month 丁未, the day 己亥.

The year is the easiest to check and the least interesting, because 1992 is one of the years where the two boundary systems coincide. Li Chun fell at 1992-02-04 13:48 UTC, and the lunar new year fell on the same date — the Hong Kong Observatory table for 1992 shows 4 February marked 正月 in the lunar column and 立春 in the solar-term column on the same line. A date 169 days later is inside the year under either rule, so the Monkey is not a judgement call.

The day pillar can be checked without any ephemeris, which is why it is worth stating. Counting sexagenary days from a known anchor — 1 October 1949 is 甲子 — puts 22 July 1992 at 己亥, and sixty days later, 20 September 1992, at 己亥 again. Two independent implementations, the site's engine and a direct Julian-day count, return the same character, which is the check that matters for a column nobody can verify by eye.

What is left is the hour, and the hour is the only thing this page has actually argued about. The date is 23rd of the sixth lunar month; the animal is the Monkey; the day master is 己, yin Earth, and stays 己 in both readings. The birth certificate that does not exist would have settled the hour and nothing else.

Questions this page answers

**What is Selena Gomez's zodiac sign?** Cancer, and narrowly. Her Sun was at 119.9327° of ecliptic longitude, 29°56′ into the sign, four arcminutes short of Leo.

**How close is that?** 101 minutes of solar motion. Leo began at 09:00:31 Central Daylight Time on 22 July 1992; the recorded birth time is 07:19.

**What if the birth time is wrong?** Then everything downstream is provisional. The time is graded C by Astro-Databank, with its source given as unknown and a note tracing it to a 2013 tweet that names a hospital in the wrong state.

**Why are there two hour pillars?** Because the clock reading 07:19 falls in 辰 and the true-solar-time reading 05:45 falls in 卯. The 94-minute difference is 60 minutes of daylight saving, 28 minutes of longitude and 6 minutes of equation of time.

**Which hour pillar does this site use?** 丁卯, the converted one, consistent with every other page here. 戊辰 is shown beside it, because a reader redoing the arithmetic will reach it.

**Does the 09:00 boundary change the Chinese chart?** No. 大暑 is a 中气, and the month pillar turns at the 节 — 小暑 on 6 July and 立秋 on 7 August. The sign changed; the pillars did not.
