Snake 2027: One Relation, and It Is the Kind Nobody Counts

The short answer

2027 is 丁未. If your year branch is 巳, the Snake, exactly one relation connects you to it.

It is 会, a directional meeting: 巳, 午 and 未 are the three branches of the south. That is the whole of it. The Snake is not in 六合 with the year — that pairing belongs to 午, the Horse. It is not clashing it, which is what 丑 does. It is not punished or destroyed by it, which is what 戌 does, and it is not harmed by it, which is what 子 does.

So the list of animals that offend the year god in 2027 has four entries and the Snake is not one of them.

That should be the end of the article, and on most pages it is not, because the one relation the Snake does hold is the one nobody counts. Meeting is not harmony, not clash, not punishment — it does not appear on the table of things to do something about. So the templates fill the gap with the nearest available sentence, and the nearest available sentence is wrong.

This page lays out where the Snake actually sits, what a directional meeting is, and how the same twelve branches get cut into groups two different ways. It does not predict anything, and the tables below are the entire evidence.

Nine Snake years, and the age each reaches in 2027

Every Snake year carries 巳, so 2027 stands in the same relation to all nine. The stem and branch pair repeats every sixty years, which is why 1929 and 1989 are both 己巳, and 1941 and 2001 are both 辛巳.

Ages count what is reached during 2027, so a birthday still ahead means one year less. The two-year-old row is not a mistake: 2025 was the last Snake year, and 2027 is the second one that child will live through.

Count all twelve branches by how many relations they hold

Before anything about meetings, it helps to see the whole board. The year is 未, so every branch either holds a relation to it or holds none, and the counts are not evenly distributed.

Twelve branches, and the Snake's row is the shortest one that still says something. One relation, and it is the kind that appears on no ritual list.

That is worth sitting with for a moment. Four animals have no relation at all in 2027, and their pages would have to say so plainly. The Snake is one step above them, and the step is real but small — smaller than the templates that group the Snake with the animals that clash.

What a directional meeting is: three slots in a row

Number the twelve branches from 0 at 子 to 11 at 亥. 子0 丑1 寅2 卯3 辰4 巳5 午6 未7 申8 酉9 戌10 亥11.

Now look for groups of three that sit next to each other. There are exactly four, and they close the whole circle without overlapping.

Four groups of three is twelve, and here is the check that matters: no branch appears in two groups. 亥子丑 runs across the zero point on purpose — it is the winter group, and winter wraps.

On a clock face each group covers ninety degrees. That is what 会 means: a quarter of the board, three adjacent stations, one season. 巳 is the first of the south, 午 the middle, 未 the last. The Snake and the Goat are in the same quarter, which is true and much weaker than being paired.

The same twelve slots, cut a second way

There is a second grouping, and it uses the same twelve branches. Take every fourth slot instead of three in a row.

Four groups again, twelve slots again, no overlap again. The difference is the shape. A meeting is a wedge — three neighbours, ninety degrees. A union is an equilateral triangle — three points 120 degrees apart, evenly spaced.

Both cuts are complete, and that is not a coincidence to be admired; it is arithmetic. Two different partitions of one twelve-slot ring.

Which makes the Snake's position exact. The Snake is at slot 5. The Goat is at slot 7.

• Meeting: 5 is in 5, 6, 7. Same group.
• Union: 5 is in 5, 9, 1. 7 is in 11, 3, 7. Different groups.

So the Snake and 2027 share a quarter and not a triangle. The Horse is in the same position — same meeting, different union — and so the Horse's two relations are harmony plus this meeting, while the Snake has only the meeting. The Rabbit and the Pig sit on the other side of the same fact: same union as the Goat, different meeting, one member short.

Where the Snake sits, and the three sentences it does not support

The classical vocabulary treats the two groupings as different kinds of statement. A meeting describes shared ground — a season, a direction, an element held in common. A union describes a cycle — the three stages of one element as it starts, peaks and is stored. Whether that distinction carries any weight is a question this page cannot settle, and the sources do not agree on how much.

What the sources do agree on is narrower and enough for 2027: neither grouping appears on the list of relations a year god is said to require handling for. That list is 值, 冲, 刑, 破, 害 — five relations, four animals in 2027, and no Snake.

Three sentences get written about the Snake in 2027 that the tables above do not support. Each is checked against the table in the third section.

• The Snake offends the year god in 2027. It does not. Four animals do, and the four are the Goat, Ox, Dog and Rat.
• The Snake and the Goat are in harmony. They share a quarter of the board. Harmony 六合 is a different table, and the Goat's partner there is the Horse.
• The Snake and the Pig are a bad match. That pairing comes from a different table again, and it has nothing to do with 2027.

The boundary: 2025 is the nearest Snake year

Two conventions decide when the year animal changes, and both are in use. The national standard follows the first day of the first lunar month. Chart casting follows 立春, the start of spring. In most years the two fall days apart.

In 2025 the start of spring fell at 22:10 on 3 February, and the first day of the lunar year was 29 January. Anyone born in those five days and twenty-two hours is a Snake under the festival count and still a Dragon on a cast chart.

Across the nine Snake years the narrowest gap is 1989, at one day and nineteen hours. The narrowest of all is not the same as the most awkward: in 2013 the start of spring fell thirteen minutes after midnight on 4 February, so someone born in those thirteen minutes has a birth date in the Snake year and a year pillar in the Dragon one.

If you know the date and hour, a chart applies the boundary to the minute. If you only know the year, the date alone cannot settle it.

What this page cannot say

Three limits.

First, a group of branches is a statement about positions in a fixed cycle of twelve. It is not a statement about a person. Charts have four branches, and the year branch is one of them; a meeting with the year says nothing about the other three.

Second, the relative weight of meeting versus union is not something the sources settle. They agree that the tables are complete and agree on their contents. They do not agree on what a meeting does to a chart, and this page has not tried to rank them.

Third, the count in the third section is a count of relations, not of difficulty. A branch with two relations is not twice as affected as a branch with one, and a branch with none is not necessarily calm. The tables record configurations; they do not measure outcomes, and nothing here should be read as a ranking of anyone's 2027.
