Hexagram 49
Revolution
Lake over Fire
The judgment
Fire sits inside the lake and the two cannot stay in the same place. Change here needs a season and a witness; too soon it sounds like noise, too late it reads as a scramble.
The image
Fire and water share a skin and one of them has to give. A change announced at the right hour needs no explanation.
The six lines
Read from the bottom up. A line that moves is read here, and read again in the hexagram it becomes.
Line 1
At the outset, bind the old layer tightly so it cannot slip loose midway.
Line 2
The change is timed to a day, not to impatience; move on the day it is due and the way opens.

Line 3
Push too fast and you stumble; hold still and it chafes—the plan needs three passes before anyone trusts it.

Line 4
Near the seat of power, let the hesitation drop, extend trust, and swap out the old arrangement.

Line 5
The one in charge changes like a tiger's coat, and others believe the new look before any sign is read.
Line 6
By now those changed through and through stand apart from those who only changed face; one more push overshoots, staying put settles it.
