Hexagram 53
Development
Wind over Mountain
The judgment
A tree grows on the mountain and its roots take the slope a year at a time. Progress here comes from sequence, and a shortcut on this ground leans sideways instead of rising.
The image
Wood takes hold on the mountain and climbs one slope at a time. A gradual line is hard to break because no single step carries it all.
The six lines
Read from the bottom up. A line that moves is read here, and read again in the hexagram it becomes.
Line 1
Speaking up at the very start, before footing is sure—hold the words back first.
Marked in the textdangerno blame
Line 2
Settled on solid ground, able to eat in peace—this steadiness comes from not rushing to move.

Line 3
The goose comes down onto dry land, wings still spread, feet already set. The one who marched out has not come back; the pregnant woman carries but does not give birth. Here holding beats striking: gather the strength inward and block the band coming in from outside.

Line 4
Near the seat of power but not yet secure—finding one small ledge to rest on is enough.
Marked in the textno blame
Line 5
The goose settles on a high ridge, the highest seat, the hardest wind. The woman goes three years without conceiving, year after year, her belly staying empty. Yet what presses on her never manages to bring her down; in the end it is this seat that steadies everything.

Line 6
At the far end, the trace left is no longer for one's own use, but for those who come after.
