The judgment

One current of air follows another and enters by the gaps, around the doors. Penetration this quiet takes repetition, and a soft push that stops at the first wall leaves nothing changed.

The image

Wind moves under wind and the two travel in the same direction. A thin line repeated wears what a blow cannot.

The six lines

Read from the bottom up. A line that moves is read here, and read again in the hexagram it becomes.

  1. 初六Line 1

Just setting out, direction unsettled, advancing a step then pulling back, footing not yet firm. That wavering force, gathered and placed in hands that dare to decide and hold, is not spent for nothing.

  2. 九二Line 2

Bowing low and repeatedly asking others to mediate, the matter loosens slowly through deference.

    Marked in the textauspiciousno blame

  3. 九三Line 3

Yielding again and again until habit takes over, leaving no room and no clear sense of what was wanted.

    Marked in the textnarrow going

  4. 六四Line 4

Close to the seat of decision, earlier misgivings scatter. Like a hunt with nets spread wide, the catch comes in three grades, great and small alike gathered in, and the outing does not come back empty.

  5. 九五Line 5

Slow to start, the pace settles as it goes, and the finish holds steadier than the beginning. Three days before acting, the day is chosen; three days after, things are gathered in once more, room left on both sides.

  6. 上九Line 6

Retreating so far that the last foothold is lost, with no path left behind.

    Marked in the textominous
