Key takeaways (~30 sec)

  • 2027 is 丁未. Of the four storehouse branches 丑 辰 未 戌, the year names three: 未 by 值, 丑 by 冲 and 戌 by 刑. 辰, the Dragon's branch, is the fourth and appears on none of the five tables.
  • The four storehouses sit at slots 1, 4, 7 and 10 — every third branch, the four corners of the circle. Measured from 未 they are six, three anticlockwise and three clockwise away.
  • 戌 and 辰 are mirror images around 未 and get opposite answers: 戌 is punished, 辰 has no relation at all. Distance therefore computes only the clash; the other four relations have to be looked up.
  • The punishment triad 丑戌未 has three members and 辰 is not among them. 辰 punishes only itself, which makes a Dragon year its punishment year — 2024 last, 2036 next.
  • Inside every storehouse the namesake carries the smallest weight: 0.6 earth, 0.3 the ending season's remains, 0.1 the stored element. The 2000 Dragon year has a 3-hour-19-minute window between 立春 and lunar new year.

2027 names three of the four storehouses

The year branch of 2027 is 未. Four earth branches are called storehouses — 丑, 辰, 未, 戌 — and 2027 puts three of them on its relation lists: 未 meets itself, 丑 clashes with it, 戌 punishes it. The fourth is 辰, and 辰 is the Dragon. Nothing on any of the five tables connects a Dragon to 2027.

Stated that way the Dragon looks lucky, which is the wrong reading. The four storehouses are a fixed piece of geometry, and the year reaches three of them. Which three is settled by the tables. Why the fourth is out of reach is also settled by the tables, and not by the reason the templates give. 辰 sits exactly as far from 未 as 戌 does, and 戌 is punished. That is the part worth reading.

Every third branch is a storehouse

Number the branches 子 0 through 亥 11 and the four storehouses land on 1, 4, 7 and 10. A spacing of three across twelve slots cuts the circle into four equal arcs, so the storehouses are the four corners of that division. 寅 and 卯 sit inside the arc that 辰 closes, 巳 and 午 inside the one 未 closes, 申 and 酉 behind 戌, 亥 and 子 behind 丑.

The other eight branches each hold a season at full strength: 寅 卯 spring, 巳 午 summer, 申 酉 autumn, 亥 子 winter. The storehouses hold the seams between seasons, and the classical naming follows the seam rather than the season. 辰 holds water, 未 holds wood, 戌 holds fire, 丑 holds metal.

Measured from 未 at 7, the other three sit at 1, 4 and 10 — six slots away, three anticlockwise, three clockwise. Six, three, three. Only the six is a clash on the standard tables. Everything else about 2027 comes from the lookup, and the two threes are where the lookup argues with arithmetic.

Two branches equally far from 未, and one of them is punished

戌 is three slots clockwise from 未. 辰 is three slots anticlockwise. Mirror images on the circle, and a Dragon looking at a chart of 2027 will find its own branch in exactly the position 戌 occupies on the other side.

戌 punishes 未; the pair belongs to the three-branch punishment 丑戌未. 辰 has no relation to 未 on any of the five tables: no harmony, no clash, no punishment, no destruction, no harm. Same distance, opposite outcome.

Clashes do not behave this way. 辰 and 戌 clash each other, so each sits six from the other and a year in either branch reaches both. Symmetry holds for the clash. It fails for the punishment, and nothing in the positions of the two branches says which case you are looking at.

The consequence is narrow and worth stating plainly. Any method that predicts a year by counting slots from the year branch will get 戌 right and 辰 wrong while using the same count. Four of the five relations cannot be computed from position at all.

The punishment triad has three members, and 辰 is not one

丑戌未 is the complete triad: those three punish among themselves, in all three pairings. 辰 is outside it. What 辰 carries instead is a punishment with itself, since 辰, 午, 酉 and 亥 are the four self-punishing branches. A Dragon's punishment year is therefore a Dragon year, not a year three slots away. Laid out against 2027, the four storehouses read like this.

BranchStorehouse ofRelation to 未 in 2027
未wood值, the year's own branch
丑metal冲 clash, six slots
戌fire刑 punishment, three slots
辰waternone

Three rows carry an entry. The empty one is the Dragon's.

What a Dragon should check instead is not the animal but the rest of the chart. A chart that already carries 丑 and 戌 receives the third member of a triad from 2027, and a chart carrying only one of them has nothing completed. Either way the statement is about those branches and whoever holds them, and it stays true whether or not the person was born in a Dragon year.

Inside a storehouse, the namesake has the smallest share

The hidden-stem table on this site splits every branch into the stems it carries, with weights. For the four storehouses the shape is identical: 0.6 for the earth stem that rules the branch, 0.3 for the stem of the season that is ending, 0.1 for the stem the storehouse is named after.

BranchEarthSeason's remainsNamesake
辰戊 0.6乙 0.3癸 0.1
未己 0.6丁 0.3乙 0.1
戌戊 0.6辛 0.3丁 0.1
丑己 0.6癸 0.3辛 0.1

Read the last column. The water in the water storehouse is one part in ten. The wood in the wood storehouse is one part in ten as well. The largest single content of every storehouse is plain earth, and the thing it is named for is the smallest of its three contents.

That is the arithmetic behind an old instruction that a storehouse must be clashed open before what it holds can be used. The reading here is that the contents sit at 0.1, and nothing milder than a clash moves a 0.1. The instruction is much older than the weights; the weights only make it legible.

What 2027 opens, and it is not the water storehouse

未 is the wood storehouse, so the branch that reaches into it is 丑: a 丑 day, a 丑 month running from early January to early February, or a 丑 hour, one to three in the morning. 辰 is the water storehouse, and what clashes it open is 戌. 戌 is not the year branch of 2027, which puts the year three corners away from where a Dragon lives. Three checks follow from that.

  1. If your year branch is 辰, the year-level answer is empty. Nothing in the five tables ties 辰 to 未.
  2. If your chart carries both 丑 and 戌, a punishment triad completes in 2027. That is a statement about those two branches and about whoever holds them.
  3. If your chart carries 辰 on its own, the next year that punishes it is a Dragon year, because 辰 punishes itself. The last was 2024 and the next is 2036.

None of the three makes the animal the subject. They make the chart the subject, which is where the branches actually sit.

Nine Dragon years and the age each reaches in 2027

Nine birth years carry 辰 as the year branch, from 1928 to 2024. The stem moves two places every twelve years while the branch stays where it is, so the pillar cycles through five stems in a fixed rotation.

Birth yearYear pillarTurns in 2027
1928戊辰99
1940庚辰87
1952壬辰75
1964甲辰63
1976丙辰51
1988戊辰39
2000庚辰27
2012壬辰15
2024甲辰3

The ages are 2027 minus the birth year, so each marks the year someone turns that number rather than a birthday already counted. The five stems repeat, which is why 1928 and 1988 both read 戊辰: sixty years apart, same pillar. 2027 sits midway between two Dragon years, with 2024 the last and 2036 the next. Anyone born in January or the first days of February of a listed year should run the boundary check below before using the row.

Where the Dragon years change hands

The nine boundaries are not evenly spaced, and one of them is unusually tight.

2000 is the narrowest of the nine. 立春 fell at 20:40:23 on 4 February, and lunar new year began at midnight four hours later, which leaves three hours, nineteen minutes and thirty-seven seconds between them. A birth inside that window is a Rabbit by the calendar and a Dragon by the year pillar, because the pillar turns at 立春 and not at new year. The 立春 times walk backwards about two hours per cycle.

Year立春, Beijing time
19285 Feb 09:16
19525 Feb 04:52
19765 Feb 00:39
19884 Feb 22:42
20124 Feb 18:22
20244 Feb 16:27

Between 1976 and 1988 that walk crossed midnight, which is why 立春 falls on 4 February for every Dragon year after it. Twelve Gregorian years hold 4,383 days against roughly 4,382.9 tropical years, and that leftover tenth of a day is what moves the clock.

What this page does and does not claim

This page counts which branches the standard tables list together. It makes no claim about what happens to a person born in a Dragon year. The distinction is not decoration: the tables describe relations between branches, and a chart is a set of branches rather than a person.

Two things are worth carrying away. The first is that 2027 is empty for a Dragon at the year level, and that the emptiness is derivable rather than lucky. The second is that 辰 and 戌 sit the same distance from 未 and get different answers, which is a warning about any method that computes relations instead of looking them up.

If you want the year-level picture across all twelve animals, the 2027 Goat page has it in one table. If you want the branch-by-branch version, the chart tool will show which of 丑, 戌 and 未 you actually carry, and that is the only part of this page that changes anything.
