Key takeaways (~30 sec)

  • 酉 and 未 are two positions apart, and no table names them: no combination, clash, harm, destruction, punishment or meeting.
  • Four branches are blank against 2027, 寅, 辰, 申 and 酉, and four is the ordinary count: eight of the twelve year branches leave exactly that many unnamed.
  • 2027 touches the Rooster's clash partner and not the Rooster: 卯 joins a wood frame, 酉 gets nothing.
  • 酉 is one of four self-punishing branches, so every Rooster's birth year is also a punishment year. The next is 2029, 己酉.
  • Nine Rooster birth years still have living people, 1921 to 2017, from 106 years old down to 10 in 2027.

A Rooster in 2027, and a blank that is not an oversight

The year branch of 2027 is 未. The Rooster's branch is 酉, two positions away. Run that pair through the seven tables the tradition keeps, 六合, 三合, 三会, 六冲, 三刑, 六害 and 六破, and every one of them comes back empty. For a Rooster, 2027 records nothing at all.

A blank invites suspicion, so here is the check. Against 未, four branches draw no entry on any of the seven: 寅, 辰, 申 and 酉. That is not a gap in the data. It is the ordinary arithmetic of a set in which seven named relations cover only part of the sixty-six possible pairs.

What makes the Rooster's case worth its own page is the company it keeps. 酉 has one fixed opposite, 卯, six positions away. In 2027 the opposite is pulled into a wood frame and the Rooster is left outside it. Two branches on the same axis, one with a reading and one without, and no birth chart is needed to see it.

What the seven tables return for 酉

The Rooster's partners are fixed, and the 2027 year branch is none of them.

六合 harmony pair辰no
三合 three harmony巳, 丑no
三会 three meeting申, 戌no
六冲 clash卯no
六害 harm戌no
六破 destruction子no
三刑 punishment酉 itselfno

Seven branches, eight entries, six rules: 戌 is the one that doubles, carrying a meeting and a harm, and 酉 carries its own punishment.

The reverse direction gives the same answer. Ask what 未 answers to and the Rooster is absent again. 午 by harmony, 巳 by meeting, 卯 and 亥 by harmony of three, 丑 by clash, 子 by harm, 戌 by destruction, 未 by its own punishment. Seven branches are named and four are not, and 酉 is one of the four.

Two positions is the smallest distance that yields nothing against this year, and it is worth stating that this is not a rule of the set. Two positions back from 未 is 巳, and 巳 sits inside the southern meeting 巳午未. The same distance in the opposite direction gives a named relation.

2027 touches the Rooster's opposite, not the Rooster

The six clash pairs are the cleanest structure in the set. Every branch has exactly one opposite, six positions away, and the pairing is symmetric, so a year landing on one end should be describable from the other. 2027 shows how little that helps.

Two pairs are touched at both ends, two at one end only, one at neither, and one contains the year branch. 卯 and 酉 are the pair where the reading flips, and the flip runs one way: the Rabbit receives a combination, the Rooster receives a line of dashes.

That is 2027 for a Rooster in a single sentence. The branch you are six positions from is being gathered into a frame you are not part of. Whatever the year does, the tables hand the Rabbit a verb and hand the Rooster nothing.

Four blank branches is the ordinary case

Counting the silence across all twelve branches deflates it. Take each branch as a year in turn and ask how many of the other eleven draw no entry on any table.

Branches left blankYear branchesHow many of the twelve
three子, 丑, 卯, 戌four
four寅, 辰, 巳, 午, 未, 申, 酉, 亥eight

A blank year is the normal case. Eight of the twelve leave exactly four branches unnamed, and none of the twelve leaves fewer than three. The Rooster's blank in 2027 is not a rare alignment; it is the modal outcome of the tables.

What varies between years is which four fall outside. For 未 they are 寅, 辰, 申 and 酉, and the four are not gathered at one distance: 申 is one position away, 酉 two, 辰 three, 寅 five. Distance alone will not find them. Nor does it sort the partners: 辰 and 未 are both earth storehouses three positions apart and share no entry, while 未 and 戌 sit the same three positions apart and are listed as a destruction.

The year that does touch a Rooster is 2028

酉 sits inside the western meeting 申酉戌, and 2028 is 戊申. Two branches of a three-branch meeting is what the tables call an incomplete frame, and it is the first time in three years that a named partner arrives next to the Rooster.

Half meetings are where readers part company. Some count two branches as a working frame, the way 卯 and 未 are counted as half of the wood combination. Others require all three and treat the pair as inert until 戌 shows up. The tables list only the full set 申酉戌, so the defensible statement about 2028 is narrow: a partner is adjacent, and what it is worth depends on which school you are reading.

The calendar after that turns direct. 2029 is 己酉, a Rooster year, and every Rooster alive is then standing in their own branch. That is the one date in this account that does not depend on any reading of any table.

Every Rooster's birth year is also a punishment year

Four branches punish themselves: 辰, 午, 酉 and 亥. Anyone born under one of them meets a year that does two things at once, because the year that returns to your own branch is both 值太岁, the arrival, and 自刑, the self-punishment.

Self-punishing branchAnimalNext such year after 2027
酉Rooster2029 己酉
亥Pig2031 辛亥
辰Dragon2036 丙辰
午Horse2038 戊午

The other eight animals get a plain birth year, with no second entry stacked on top. So the tradition's own lists put the Rooster's loudest year on the same footing as the Dragon's, the Horse's and the Pig's, and place the next one two years after 2027.

The self-punishment is the softer half of that pair, and it is worth saying so. The two punishment cycles 寅巳申 and 丑戌未 are the ones every list agrees on; 子卯 is the third. 辰午酉亥 appear as a fourth group in some books and as an extension in others, which is why a Rooster will meet confident claims in both directions.

Nine birth years, and two ladders with the same step

2005乙酉22

1981辛酉46
1969己酉58
1957丁酉70
1945乙酉82
1933癸酉94
1921辛酉106

Two columns here run on the same step of twelve, and the reason is on the left. In the sixty-year cycle the Rooster pillars are numbers 10, 22, 34, 46 and 58, because 酉 pairs only with the five yin stems and the pairs fall twelve apart. The ages fall twelve apart as well, from 10 to 106. One arithmetic fact, two ladders.

The ages are calendar ages: 2027 minus the birth year, with no 虚岁 adjustment. Include the traditional count and every figure in that column rises by one or two, so the table is worth pinning down before it is used.

Where the 2017 line falls, to the minute

Every Rooster year has a boundary, and the 2017 one moved. From 1921 to 2005, eight consecutive Rooster years, 立春 fell on 4 February. In 2017 it fell on 3 February at 23:34:03 Beijing time, the first of the series to cross back over midnight.

Rooster year立春, Beijing time
19214 February, 16:19:51
19454 February, 12:19:07
19694 February, 07:58:49
19934 February, 03:37:09
20173 February, 23:34:03
20293 February, 21:20:46

The two conventions then split one calendar into a band. Lunar new year 2017 fell on 28 January, so a birth between 28 January and 3 February at 23:34 is a Rooster by the popular count and a Monkey by the pillar: six days, 23 hours and 34 minutes during which the two answers differ by a whole animal.

Both conventions are in use. The national standard follows the lunar new year and the almanacs used for pillars follow 立春, so the band is not an error in either direction. It is where the two calendars disagree, and 2017 is the Rooster year where that gap sits latest in the day.

What is left to do with a year that says nothing

2027 begins for the pillar calendar at 立春, 4 February at 09:46:18 Beijing time. For a Rooster nothing in the tables changes at that moment. The year branch stays 未, the pair stays unnamed, and no offering, direction or colour follows from it, because none of the five categories of 犯太岁 applies: no clash, no harm, no destruction, no punishment, no arrival at your own branch.

A blank reading is still a reading. It says the year is not about your branch, which is a claim about seven tables and not about anyone's life. What the tables do hand over is a sequence of dates: 2028 puts 申 beside 酉, 2029 returns to 酉 and stacks the self-punishment on top of the arrival.

A Rooster who wants 2027 to mean something has to bring it from somewhere other than the year branch, and the honest version of that is a chart, not a page.
