Key takeaways (~30 sec)

  • 寅 and an 未 year share nothing on any of the seven tables: not the harmony pair, the three harmonies, the three meetings, the clash, the punishment, the harm or the destruction.
  • The Tiger's ten relation entries land on seven branches. Four branches never appear on its table, and 未, the 2027 year branch, is one of them. Nor does a Tiger appear on 未's table.
  • Half-combination, harm and hidden punishment all fail the same way: a correctly remembered table applied to a pair that is not on it. Only the fourth answer, no relation, survives a lookup.
  • Hidden combination has a real mechanism, drawn from the hidden stems: 甲 inside 寅 pairs with 己 inside 未, one cell of nine. 寅 against 丑 opens three cells, which is why published lists put 寅未 in a second tier.
  • Run the same rule across all 66 pairs and it returns thirty, or seven if only primary stems count, while the published lists give five. A rule with four answers is a judgement, not a table.

A Tiger in 2027, and five answers to one question

The year branch of 2027 is 未. Run 寅 and 未 through the seven tables the tradition keeps, 六合, 三合, 三会, 六冲, 三刑, 六害 and 六破, and all seven come back empty. For a Tiger, 2027 records nothing.

That is the whole of what the tables say, and it is not what gets printed. The same pair is described five ways: a half-combination, a harm, a hidden punishment, no relation at all, and a hidden combination. Four of those can be settled by lookup. The fifth cannot, because it is not a claim about branches, and it is the only one with a mechanism behind it.

The tables name seven branches for the Tiger, and 未 is not one

A branch's partners are fixed, and for 寅 there are ten entries landing on seven branches.

RulePartners of 寅
六合 harmony pair亥
三合 three harmony午, 戌
三会 three meeting卯, 辰
六冲 clash申
三刑 punishment巳, 申
六害 harm巳
六破 destruction亥

Ten entries over seven branches, because three partners carry two rules each. 亥 is both a harmony and a destruction, 巳 is both a harm and a punishment, 申 is both a clash and a punishment. Four branches never appear on the Tiger's table, 子, 丑, 未 and 酉, and 未 is the 2027 year branch.

The blank runs both ways. Draw the same table for 未 and the Tiger is absent from it too. Two branches that never name each other still share five partners, 亥, 午, 戌, 卯 and 巳, and that shared list is where 2027 will actually be felt.

Five printed answers, sorted by what each one needs

Here are the five, next to the condition each one has to meet.

ClaimConditionResult
half-combinationboth branches inside one three-harmony set寅午戌 against 亥卯未, different sets
harmthe pair to be one of the six harm pairs寅 harms 巳, 未 harms 子
hidden punishmentboth inside one punishment triad寅巳申 against 丑戌未, no overlap
no relationall seven tables emptyholds
hidden combinationcarried stems forming a stem pair甲 against 己, holds once

The first three fail in the same way, and the way is worth naming: each takes a real table, remembered correctly, and applies it to a pair that is not on it. The fourth is accurate and stops at the surface. The fifth is accurate, and it arrives with a condition that the sources using it tend to leave out.

Three of them fail on lookup

Half-combination is the quickest to test. The four sets are 申子辰, 亥卯未, 寅午戌 and 巳酉丑, and the eight half-combinations are the pairs inside them that keep the middle branch: 申子, 子辰, 亥卯, 卯未, 寅午, 午戌, 巳酉, 酉丑. 寅 and 未 sit in different sets, so they are not half of anything.

Harm: the six pairs are 子未, 丑午, 寅巳, 卯辰, 申亥 and 酉戌. The Tiger's partner is 巳 and the Goat's is 子. Neither one appears on the other's line.

Punishment: two triads, 寅巳申 and 丑戌未, one pair, 子卯, and four branches that punish themselves, 辰午酉亥. 寅 and 未 fall in different triads with no member in common. One explainer carries both halves of this inside a single paragraph. It states correctly that 寅 punishes 巳 and 申 and that 未 is not among them, then describes the pair as holding a faint hidden punishment anyway.

The fourth is right and reads only half the branch

Seven blanks is a real result, and it is not the end of the question, because all seven tables compare branch to branch. A branch is not one thing. 寅 carries 甲 at 0.6, 丙 at 0.3 and 戊 at 0.1; 未 carries 己 at 0.6, 丁 at 0.3 and 乙 at 0.1. Those are the weights this site's chart engine uses, and they are the ordinary 藏干 table.

Opening the stacks changes the question. It is no longer whether 寅 stands opposite 未 on a table, but whether anything inside 寅 pairs with anything inside 未. The fifth answer comes from there, and that is also why it cannot be found in the seven tables: it is not a relation between branches at all. It is a relation between what those branches hold.

The fifth has a mechanism and a threshold

The five stem pairs are 甲己, 乙庚, 丙辛, 丁壬 and 戊癸. 寅 holds 甲, 未 holds 己, and one cell of nine opens.

Inner 寅己 0.6丁 0.3乙 0.1
甲 0.6pairs——
丙 0.3———
戊 0.1———

One in nine. Run the same grid for 寅 against 丑 and three cells open, because 丑 holds 己, 癸 and 辛: 甲己, 戊癸 and 丙辛 all land. That difference is where the published tiering comes from. 寅丑, 卯申 and 午亥 are called first-tier hidden combinations; 寅未 and 子戌 are second-tier, and the reason given is that in 寅未 only the primary stems pair. The nine cells count three against one, so the tier was not assigned by taste. Somebody ran this arithmetic.

The mechanism will not produce a list

None of that makes hidden combination a table, and the test is the one that settled the six harms: run the rule across every pair and see whether it returns a set.

Across the sixty-six pairs of branches, any carried stem pairing with any carried stem returns thirty. Narrowing it to the primary stems returns seven: 子辰, 子戌, 寅丑, 寅未, 卯申, 巳酉 and 午亥. The lists in circulation give five, 寅丑, 卯申, 午亥, 寅未 and 子戌, and one version swaps 子戌 for 子巳. Three lists, one rule, no agreement.

A rule that answers thirty, seven, five, and five-with-a-substitution is a judgement about what should count, not a table that states what is. So the fifth answer survives only in a narrower form than the one printed: 甲 inside 寅 faces 己 inside 未, and a year branch that is itself earth gives the stated 甲己 transformation into earth something to stand on. Whether it transforms belongs to a whole chart, and this page does not decide it.

Nine Tiger years, and a date that only looks fixed

Birth yearPillarAge in 2027
1926丙寅101
1938戊寅89
1950庚寅77
1962壬寅65
1974甲寅53
1986丙寅41
1998戊寅29
2010庚寅17
2022壬寅5

Ages are 2027 minus the birth year, so each cell marks the year someone turns that number. The five stems cycle every sixty years, which is why 1926 and 1986 both read 丙寅.

All nine of those 立春 times fall on 4 February, which looks like a rule and is a plateau. Widen the window and it has two edges: 1902 fell on 5 February, 1914 through 2046 are all on the 4th, and from 2058 every Tiger year left in the century drops to 3 February. Inside the plateau the clock still walks backwards, 21:37:56 in 1926 to 04:50:48 in 2022 without touching midnight. Lunar new year moves the other way, from 23 January in 1974 to 17 February in 1950, so the gap between the lines swings from twelve days behind to fifteen days ahead.

What a Tiger should read instead

Return to the five shared partners. The year acts on eight branches in all, and five of them sit on a Tiger's own table: 亥, 午, 戌, 卯 and 巳. It treats those five unevenly. 亥 joins 未 in one three-harmony set and 卯 joins the same set. 午 meets 未 in a harmony pair and in a meeting both. 巳 meets it in the meeting. 戌 is punished and destroyed by it.

Four in, one out. A Tiger's 2027 is therefore quiet at the level of the branch and busy one step away. If the people closest to you carry 亥, 卯, 午 or 巳, their year is the one that moves, and 戌 is the one carrying the friction. That is the only form of the answer with anything in it.

The year worth marking is not this one. 2028 is 戊申, and 申 is a Tiger's clash and a Tiger's punishment at once. That entry exists on the table, and it is twelve months off.
