The judgment

Thunder moves under heaven and nothing here is invented. Meet what is there and the way stays clear; substitute a story for it and the same ground turns on you.

The image

Thunder rolls under an open sky with nothing added to it. The season arrives whether or not anyone calls it.

The six lines

Read from the bottom up. A line that moves is read here, and read again in the hexagram it becomes.

  1. 初九Line 1

Setting out with nothing in hand works; setting out to secure an advantage trips you before the first step.

    Marked in the textauspicious

  2. 六二Line 2

Stop watching for the harvest and finish the patch in front of you; measure the return as you go and your hands stall.

  3. 六三Line 3

A trouble that was never yours arrives anyway: a passerby leads off the ox, and the one who stayed behind pays.

  4. 九四Line 4

Close to the one in charge, watched from every side; holding your posture still costs less than speaking up early.

    Marked in the textno blame

  5. 九五Line 5

This ailment needs no medicine; the more you treat it, the longer it clings. Leave it and it fades.

  6. 上九Line 6

One more step at the very end lands in a pit; stopping here saves more than pressing on.

Marked in the textnothing is served
