The judgment

Water gathers on the plain and the low ground fills first. A crowd this size needs a center and a supply line, and without both it turns into weather.

The image

The lake rests on the earth and the water finds one level. A gathering holds when the ground under it is prepared.

The six lines

Read from the bottom up. A line that moves is read here, and read again in the hexagram it becomes.

  1. 初六Line 1

Sincerity was held, but not to the end; the crowd scattered and gathered again. A shout, a single grip, and the laughter returns. That fluster need not be worried over; go forward, and the road has no snag.

    Marked in the textno blame

  2. 六二Line 2

Being drawn along costs less than clearing the road yourself; what is offered need not be lavish, only genuine.

    Marked in the textauspiciousno blame

  3. 六三Line 3

Trying to gather only draws sighs; staying gives nothing, one step out costs a little.

  4. 九四Line 4

One layer below the seat, most exposed; simply holding this layer steady matters more than contending.

    Marked in the textauspiciousno blame

  5. 九五Line 5

Seated where people gather, some still unconvinced; only a long unchanging stance draws them back.

Marked in the textno blameregret clears

  6. 上六Line 6

At the parting, carrying goods and weeping; what was gathered is gathered, and the tears pass.

    Marked in the textno blame
