The judgment

Fire on the mountain moves with the grass and does not own the slope. A guest who takes the host's chair loses the room, so the move is small, portable and polite.

The image

Fire crosses the hillside and leaves no root behind. A traveler keeps the bag light and the door easy to close.

The six lines

Read from the bottom up. A line that moves is read here, and read again in the hexagram it becomes.

  1. 初六Line 1

At the outset, energy spent on petty details drags one deeper into trouble.

  2. 六二Line 2

A place to stay, means in hand, and reliable help nearby: a steady footing.

  3. 九三Line 3

Shelter burns down and helpers scatter, leaving nowhere to advance or retreat.

  4. 九四Line 4

Settled for now with tools and means, yet an unease persists underneath.

  5. 六五Line 5

One shot costs an arrow, yet the loss brings recognition and a charge.

  6. 上九Line 6

The nest is consumed by fire; the traveler laughs first, then wails aloud. The ox is lost in Yi — the steadiest support gone with it.
