The judgment

Fire has doubled and each flame needs something to burn. Brightness here is borrowed from what it holds on to, and the fuel decides how long it lasts.

The image

Two flames climb from the same ground and light whatever stands near. Take the fuel away and both go out in the same hour.

The six lines

Read from the bottom up. A line that moves is read here, and read again in the hexagram it becomes.

  1. 初九Line 1

At the start the footsteps scatter; pause and sort out direction before moving.

    Marked in the textno blame

  2. 六二Line 2

Hold to the light at the center, neither leaning nor straining; that steadiness is the firmest ground.

    Marked in the textauspicious

  3. 九三Line 3

The sun slants west yet you keep straining, refusing to drum and let go; the delay wears you thin.

    Marked in the textominous

  4. 九四Line 4

It arrives all at once, burns hot, dies fast, and leaves only what was thrown aside.

  5. 六五Line 5

Tears and sighs spill out; letting the strain show is what finally releases the breath.

    Marked in the textauspicious

  6. 上九Line 6

At the end, strike only the ringleader and spare the rest, or the ending drags on.

    Marked in the textno blame
