Hexagram 22
Grace
Mountain over Fire
The judgment
Fire under the mountain lights the slope without warming it. Ornament carries small matters and leaves large ones as they were.
The image
Fire at the foot of the mountain makes the ridge visible at dusk. A clear outline reads well and carries nothing.
The six lines
Read from the bottom up. A line that moves is read here, and read again in the hexagram it becomes.
Line 1
Too little strength to start; leave the carriage and walk, spending effort on your feet rather than display.
Line 2
Trimming the edges of something larger, holding a steady middle place without weight of your own.
Line 3
At the inner limit, the luster soaks soft; staying put long is what keeps it from slipping away.
Marked in the textauspicious
Line 4
Near the seat of power and afraid; the white horse gallops then halts, and the comer is no rival but a match.
Line 5
Withdrawing to a plain garden, offering a thin bundle of cloth; the scene looks bare, and room remains.
Marked in the textnarrow goingauspicious
Line 6
At the end, strip away all ornament until only the plain ground shows; stepping back leaves nothing exposed.
Marked in the textno blame
