The judgment

元亨

Fire sits above heaven and lights the whole field. What you hold is large, and a loose hand keeps it.

The image

One soft line holds the middle of five strong ones. Full sun at noon also marks the start of the afternoon.

The six lines

Read from the bottom up. A line that moves is read here, and read again in the hexagram it becomes.

  1. 初九Line 1

At the very start, with little in hand, hold back from entanglement; letting it sit and endure spares later trouble.

    Marked in the textno blame

  2. 九二Line 2

Load the cart squarely before setting out; only a wide enough bed can carry you far. The room here lies in first building what holds the weight.

    Marked in the textno blame

  3. 九三Line 3

The lord brings what he holds to the Son of Heaven's steps; that is the road a servant can walk. One whose measure and station fall short cannot lift that weight, and scatters halfway.

  4. 九四Line 4

Beside the seat of power, a sharp display invites resentment; pull in that edge and room to stand appears.

    Marked in the textno blame

  5. 六五Line 5

Sincerity keeps dealings flowing, but warmth alone cannot hold a situation; it needs weight beside it to stand.

    Marked in the textauspicious

  6. 上九Line 6

At the end, hand the matter over and yield; moving with the drift costs less than forcing, and the rest gets carried on.

Marked in the textauspiciousnothing works against it
